Mascots and Letters

The Monkey aboard the USS Gillette

For a short time, the crew had an island monkey as a mascot, which brought smiles to the crew.

Shown above is the monkey with Crewmate Anthony Faiella.

Unfortunately, the monkey would later get sick and had to be put down, so as not to infect the rest of the crew.


Above is a letter from Crewmate R. Sanders to Crewmate Joseph Imbogliazzo. In a passage in the letter, Crewmate Sanders makes reference to the little mascot:

"If any of those pictures taken with the monkey are any good I'd sure like to have one or two. I still don't feel right about that monkey being killed. But guess it was best."

Even in the midst of war, Americans were concerned with Life; not Death.
