United States Navy The USS Gillette Homepage Portrait of the Gillette

Mystery Decoration
Ceremony Solved !!!

The photos shown here were donated by Crewmate Frank Del Bosco.

Shown here is Mr. Neil Smith, brave Gillette sailor, who was decorated for heroism while serving in the North Atlantic. After the tragic torpedo attack of the Leopoldville, Seaman Smith, at risk of life and limb, engaged in a personal attempt to save as many sailors as he could.

The "Mystery History" states that no Gillette Crewmen received any awards, yet these photos clearly indicate a decoration ceremony, so we have yet another mystery aboard the Gillette.

Well Done, Seaman Smith !!!

Our best wishes go out to him and his family.
