Museum Quality Model of the USS Gillette DE-681

A small token of our esteem… and a labor of love.

Here is a model of the Gillette that we put together over the course of a few weeks. The kit was acquired from a used and out of date model kit supplier. (Note: since its construction, I have found several kits of Buckley class destroyer escorts manufactured by several different companies).

The kit was sanded and assembled with regular plastic cement. Over the course of several weeks, I applied several very thin 'washes' of dark color to sink into the recesses and cracks of the molded details. Each wash had to completely air dry before applying the next. After the washes, several sessions of drybrushing with progressively lighter highlights were applied. After these completely dried, The details were painted, as was the Atlantic Disruption Pattern which was gathered from the reference photographs we had. A very basic set of rigging was cemented into place, and the base was painted with several layers of washes to simulate the metallic surface of the harsh Atlantic sea.

This model is dedicated to all the Gillette's Crew, to the memory of T. Szczypiorski, to the United States Navy, and to the Constitution of the United States of America.
Thank You, Visitor, for sharing this with us.
