NEWSPAPER: The Winterset Madisonian, March 8, 1889 Vol. 33 No. 22A: "Peru Shooting. The usual quiet village of Peru, in the south part of the county, was aroused Thursday eve., Feb. 28th, by a constable shooting a young man he was trying to arrest. The trouble occurred at the Methodist church. Prayer meeting was in progress. One John Emerson came in and made considerable disturbance. He was requested to desist but refused to do so. He was told that if he did not become quiet aid of the law would be invoked against him. He grew furious and declared that he would not be arrested, that there were not enough people in the house to arrest him, etc. Constable A. S. Young was sent for. He came to the church, and proceeded to arrest Emerson, going up to him and laying his hand on his shoulder. Emerson drew back, took a pistol from his pocket and pointed it towards Young but the latter was too quick for him, and taking out his own revolver shot Emerson through the shoulder. The wound is only in the flesh and, though painful, is not likely to prove serious. Whether or not it was necessary for the constable to shoot him, in order to protect himself, we know not, but it would appear that it was, judging from the accounts of the affair we have heard. But it seems reasonably certain that he was disturbing a religious meeting, and therefore deserved arrest and punishment.
