SHERIFF DIES IN CAR CRASH NEAR IOWA LINE
Shambaugh, Ia. Feb. 24 (AP)- Sheriff Earl Anderson, 61, of Baryville, Mo., was killed and his deputy critically injured early Sunday in a two-car collision near this border town. They were en route to interview a robbery victim. George Beverlin, 52, the deputy, sustained a fractured skull, broken ribs and other injuries. He was driving the car when it became involved in a collision with an automobile driven by Carl Newberg, 37, Braddyville, Ia. They were answering a call from Charlie Clemens, whose liquor store a mile south of Braddyville -- on the Missouri side of the state line -- was held up by two armed men. Clemens was slugged and his telephone was ripped from the wall. He walked to Braddyville to call the sheriff and the officers were en route there to interview him.
