Powell, well known resident of Winterset and Madison county through most of his life, died Thursday, January 27, at Clarinda, where he had moved in 1947. He was 81 years of age. Mr. Powell was born in Peoria county, Illinois on April 22, 1873, a son of Orrin and Mary Hunt Powell. He came to Madison county with his parents when he was 8 years of age. He spent his early life in farming, and later engaged in business in Winterset. In 1947, he and Mrs. Powell moved to Clarinda to make their home with their daughter and her husband there. After Mrs. Powell's death he lived for a while in Winterset and Des Moines before returning to Clarinda. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Golda Jorgenson and Mrs. Ruth Drees, both of Des Moines, two grandchildren; two great grandchildren, a brother, Melvin Powell of Minnesota; and a sister, Julia Clifton of Winterset.
Funeral Services were held Sunday from the Richards Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. W. W. Steinmetz, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery."

She was born in this county Nov. 2, 1876 and continued to reside here until the family moved to Clarinda four years ago. She united with the Methodist church in Peru a number of years ago. On December 18, 1895, she was married to Sam Powell. They were the parents of three children. Mr. Powell and two of the children survive; Mrs. Leonard Jorgenson of Clarinda and Mrs. Bert Drees of Stanzel. The son died at ........; a sister Mr. Elva Chaffer of Yakima, Washington. Funeral services were held in Clarinda Saturday and the body was brought to this county where the Rev. Greenwood, pastor of the Clarinda Methodist church, conducted brief burial services at the Peru cemetery Saturday afternoon. The relatives coming here for the services were Mr. Powell and Mr. and Mrs. Jorgenson of Clarinda. James Jorgenson of Akron, O., and Mr. and Mrs. Bert Drees of Stanzel."

He also leaves a son, Larry Hope of Winterset; four grandchildren; two brothers, Leland Hope of Winterset and Harold Hope of Albany, Ore.; and five sisters, Mrs. Irene McCollom of Davenport, Mrs. Gertude Mapes of Earlham, Mrs. Dorothy Knight of Winterset, Mrs. Edna Addy and Mrs. Helen Tilly of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence C. Hope, a daughter Sharon Kay Hope, and two brothers, Donald and Claude Hope. Funeral services were held Saturday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, conducted by the Rev. Newton Coughenour, pastor of the First United Methodist church here. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery."

He was 78 years of age. A son of James and Eliza Ann Miller Emerson, he was born at Peru on Dec. 11, 1889. He was married to Pearl Silliman on June 24, 1908 at Winterset. Mr. Emerson was a life-long resident of Madison County. He farmed near Peru for a number of years, moving to Winterset in 1939, where he engaged in the insurance and real estate business. He was mayor of Winterset for three terms, from 1954 to 1960. He was a member of the Winterset Methodist church, the Methodist Men's group, and Knights of Pythias. Surviving are his wife; three children, Mrs. Ruby Deremiah of Des Moines, Mrs. Hazel Baker of Lorimor, and Martin Emerson of Creston; six grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; one brother, Loyal Emerson of Winterset; and a sister, Mrs. Birdie Shearer of Peru. He was preceded in death by six brothers and sisters, and two sons, Guy and Glenn. Officiating at the service last Friday was the Rev. Everett Burham. Burial was in the Peru cemetery."

Mrs. Emerson is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruby Deremiah of Des Moines and Mrs. Hazel Baker of Lorimor; a son, Martin Emerson of Creston; six grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren. She also leaves a brother, Lonnie Silliman of Winterset. Two of her sons, Glenn and Guy Emerson, preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Saturday from the First United Methodist Church in Winterset, conducted by the pastor, the Rev. Newton Coughenour. Burial was made in the Peru Cemetery.
