OBIT: Winterset Madisonian - April 10, 1940, Winterset, Iowa, J. E. LILLEY DIES, J. E. Lilley, former Madison county resident, died Monday at the Broadlawns General hospital in Des Moines, of injuries suffered when he was struck by a car last Thursday. He was struck by a car as he attempted to cross the street at Ninth street and University, and suffered fractures of both legs and head and back injuries. Mr. Lilley, a carpenter, had been a resident of Des Moines 37 years. He is survived by his wife and an adopted son and daughter, and a brother, George Lilley of Houston, Texas. Mr. and Mrs. J. Earl Emerson and Mr. and Mrs. Grover Mease drove to Des Moines Wednesday to attend the funeral services which were held at the Hamilton funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Burial was made in Indianola. Mr. Lilley was an uncle of Mr. Emerson and Mrs. Mease.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Mease, 90, of Winterset Care Center North were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, at Collins Funeral Home. Burial was in the Peru Cemetery with Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Mrs. Mease died April 19 at the Madison County Memorial Hospital. Born at Peru on October 30, 1888, Mrs. Mease was a daughter of Sylvester and Gussie Lillie Emerson. She was married to Grover C. Mease, who preceded her in death, on October 24, 1907, in Winterset. A lifelong resident of Winterset, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church here. She is survived by two sons, Jack and Willard, both of Winterset; a daughter, Thelma Colvin of San Diego, Calif., 10 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren. Also preceding her in death were her parents; an infant son; a daughter, Lois Eve Welch, and three brothers.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Mrs. William See of Peru; a son, Dean Emerson of Peru; six grandchildren; one great grandchild; a sister, Mrs. Ethel Mease of Winterset; and a brother, Ralph Emerson of Newton. Funeral services were held Saturday from the Collins Funeral home in Winterset, in charge of the Rev. John E. Fink, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church of Winterset. Burial was made in the Peru cemetery."

Mrs. Emerson is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Doris See of Peru; a son Dean Emerson of Peru, her mother, Mrs. Callie Frederickson of Winterset; six grandchildren; a great grandchild; two brothers, DeVern and Russell Frederickson of Riverton, Wyo.; and two sisters, Mrs. Deloris Stevens of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Mrs. Lenore Ruth of Peru. Funeral services will be held this Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Collins Funeral home, conducted by the Rev. John E. Fink, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church of Winterset. Burial will be made in the Peru cemetery. A memorial is being established in Mrs. Emerson's memory. Contributions may be made to Mrs. Dale A. Callison of Winterset."

She was born September 6, 1916, at Peru, to Grover and Ethel Emerson Mease. On November 20, 1937, she married Albert E. (John) Welch at Winterset. A lifetime resident of Madison county, Mrs. Welch was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for which she had done volunteer work the past two years. She also belonged to Susanna Circle, served as co-chairman of the cancer drive, and was an active member of the Democratic party. Past president of Legion Auxiliary, she also was a legal secretary for nine years in the office of Webster, Jordan, and Oliver before retiring in 1973. Her husband John survives her, as do two sons: Larry of Nora Springs and Paul of Truro; daughter, Nancy Breitkreutz of Ankeny; her mother, Ethel Mease of Winterset; and two grandchildren. Survivors also include two brothers, Willard and Jack Mease of Winterset, and one sister, Thelma M. Colvin of San Diego, California. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother. Services were held Saturday, September 10, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Byrn Ayers officiating. Burial was made in the Winterset Cemetery.

NEWSPAPER: The Winterset Madisonian, Winterset, Iowa, August 13, 1980: "G. W. MEASE Services Wednesday, Grover Willard Mease of 115 S. Tenth St. died Monday, Aug. 11, 1980, at Madison County Memorial Hospital at the age of 60. A native of Madison County, Mr. Mease was president of Farmers & Merchants State Bank of Winterset at the time of his death.
Born on a farm near Peru, he was the son of Grover C. and Ethel Emerson Mease. He was united in marriage to Berneice L. Kelley on June 14, 1941, in Winterset, and his wife survives him.
Mr. Mease served with the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the Winterset VFW, Lakeview Country Club and the Board of Directors of Farmers & Merchants State Bank, with which he was associated for 20 years. Prior to that he was with Bank of America in California, a finance company in Davenport and was manager of a B.G. Goodrich store in eastern Iowa.
Several years ago Mr. Mease headed a drive in Winterset to restore and renovate buildings in the business district. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Also surviving are three children, James W. Mease, Judith Ann Trask and Jane Marie Reed, all of Winterset; five grandchildren; a brother, Jack Mease of Winterset; and a sister, Thelma M. Colvin of San Diego, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Paul, and a sister, Lois Eve Welch. Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Byron Ayers officiating. Burial was at the Winterset Cemetery."

NEWSPAPER: The Winterset Madisonian, Winterset, Iowa, September 8, 1999: "Jack Mease, Winterset -- Jack Don Mease, 73, of Winterset died of a heart ailment Sept. 4, 1999, at his residence. Funeral services were held today (Wednesday, Sept. 8) at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Winterset with Pastor Robert Barrick officiating. Burial was in Winterset Cemetery. Jack Mease was born Feb. 25, 1926, in Madison County to Grover C. and Ethel (Emerson) Mease. He was a 1943 graduate of Winterset High School. He married Margaret Steddom on Dec. 4, 1945, in Winterset. A lifetime resident of Madison County, he was a retired insurance agent and manager of Farmers Mutual Insurance Association and Mease Insurance. Jack was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the First United Methodist Church, a board member of the Madison County Historical Society (serving as treasurer for many years), a member of the board of trustees of the Winterset Public Library, and a retired member of the board of directors of IMT Insurance Company. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a brother and two sisters. He is survived by his wife; two sons, Jerry R. Mease (wife Vicki) of Winterset and Daniel K. Mease (wife Kristi) of Decorah; and five grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Methodist Church, Madison County Historical Society or the Friends of the Winterset Library. Funeral arrangements were handled by Collins Funeral Home in Winterset."
