Beverlin had delivered a load of cobs to the home of Mrs. Mae Shearer in Peru using a farm tractor to do the hauling. After unloading, he started down the street south from the Shearer residence. About half way down the hill there, which is quite steep, the belt pulley on the tractor shattered.
A piece of the pulley struck Beverlin in the right leg, just below the knee cap. It shattered the bone and tore away much of the flesh, except for the muscles at the back of the leg.
Beverlin stopped the tractor and called to two school boys to bring help. He was rushed to the Winterset hospital, where first aid was given, and he was then taken to the Methodist hospital in Des Moines. He was given a blood transfusion, made necessary by the considerable loss of blood from the wound, and underwent an operation by a bone specialist.
