What is a Whoremonger?

I was contemplating recently certain actions I had observed by men in the past, where they were in essence being directed by certain women, which had adversely affected me. These events in my past were troubling me in that I was treated unfairly and improperly. How could those men pretend what they did was right? The thought came to me that these men were whoremongers. Great!, I thought. Now I'd just go to the Bible to confirm it and I'd have a firm answer. Well, not exactly...

There are five uses of the word "whoremonger" in the KJV New Testament:

Eph 5:5* For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God.
1 Ti 1:10* For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
Heb 13:4* Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.
Rev 21:8* But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Rev 22:15* For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and whoremongers, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie.

The above uses clearly declare that a whoremonger is one in a spiritually fallen state, one who will be rejected from the Kingdom of Heaven. But aside from Hebrews 13:4, there are no real characteristics given whereby we can identify them. Hebrews 13:4 tells us that, like the adulterer, a whoremonger defiles the marriage bed, but with no way to know the definition; we can only surmise that a whoremonger is not the same as an adulterer, else it would be a redundancy.

At this point, I turned to the Strong's information for the underlying Greek word:

1) a man who prostitutes his body to another's lust for hire
2) a male prostitute
3) a man who indulges in unlawful sexual intercourse, a fornicator

This entry tells us that a whoremonger is a male prostitute, or what we might call a gigolo. Looking back at the uses, and considering my own revelation, I decided I couldn't accept this definition. Firstly, in the grand scheme of things, I do not consider male prostitutes to be as bad as the abominable, murderers, sorcerers, idolaters, liars (Rev 21:8), the impudent (dogs), and whosoever loves and maketh a lie (Rev 22:15). I don't think they hurt anybody but themselves in their prostitution. Maybe that's just me. (I hold a special hatred for those who like to cause others to err.) Secondly, I don't believe that there are so many male prostitutes compared to the numbers of the others - murderers, idolaters, liars, etc. - so that they would be named specifically. So where do I look for more information?

Then I noticed that the Greek word "pornos" is also translated as "fornicators." It's the same underlying Greek word, but somehow the KJV translators rendered it differently in the other five uses. But the meaning must be the same, because it's the same Greek word! So let's look at those other uses:

1Cor 5:9* I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:
1Cor 5:10* Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.
1Cor 5:11* But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
1Cor 6:9* Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
Heb 12:16* Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

From the first four uses all we learn new is to stay away from fornicators. But the fifth usage at Hebrews 12:16 gives us a usage in context, from which we might discern a real definition! The way I read it, it means that Esau was profane because he "fornicated" by selling his birthright for a single meal. He gave away, he traded, he treated contemptuously what God had provided for him - his birthright - by giving it up at all, much less for a morsel of meat. So this supplies the definition I was seeking: generally, a whoremonger is a man who treats what he has from God contemptuously by giving it up for something else. Specifically, I believe, it's in giving up the spiritually valuable thing in the search for sex.

Looking back at the Strong's entry for "pornos," we see that it all has to do with sex. I am persuaded, therefore, that the "pornos" man is one who, in the manner of Esau's sin, sells himself (including his gifts from God) in the search for sex, attempting to make himself pleasing to women for that end.

There are many ways this can occur: a man giving his word, judgment, reproof, his good name, his muscle, or anything else like it. I believe the "pornos" man misuses his authority/power seeking to be viewed favorably by women - all hoping for a sexual reward. Using this definition of whoremonger, I could see how those men who had mistreated me, or allowed me to be mistreated, were blind to what was happening because they were letting their unacknowledge sexual drives guide their actions or inactions.+ I think that if some men were abusing me, others would have intervened; but because there was a woman controlling the group pretending she was teasing, I was allowed to be abused.++ I hope others see that (unlike gigolos) the world is full of men like this. Now it makes sense me to include this kind of whoremonger with murderers, sorcerers, and idolaters; they are all grievous sinners that adversely affect others.


Then it occurred to me that this must be why (as I've read) Satanism is centered around phallic* worship, and why there is so much sexual imagery used in commercial advertising and otherwise apparent in modern society. Beer and pizza** are not powerful enough motivators to make people (men) do things they would otherwise not do, especially to go against their own morals or good sense. But the search for sexual intimacy, now that drives all of us, and in ways we may not realize.

Like billboards advertising a fast food restaurant, they sit seen but unnoticed by most of us. They are in the background of our consciousness and we mainly don't think about them. But our subconscious sees them and occasionally might cause us to go to the fast food chain when without the billboard we would not.

So with sexual imagery but much stronger. We see but (because it's so pervasive) don't really notice all the sexual imagery in advertising, television, movies, and the like, but out subconscious does. Does this cause us to do things we would not otherwise do in a search for sexual contact? I think it does. Open your eyes and look at the world. Watch the way certain women play men like puppets, or like dogs enticed by a treat. Notice how women are many times given deference they don't deserve. Watch the stupid things we men do to "impress" women. Watch how some men hurt others in order to gain favor with a women. We're so well trained, we men do these things without the expectation for sex, but just for the sake of pleasing a woman. I believe that when we men compromise our integrity, our honor, our word, our spiritual standing, our gifts from God, or anything else like these, we've committed fornication/whoremongering. If we do these things we've gotten our priorities wrong, and we'd be excluded from the Kingdom of Heaven.
