I became interested in the New Testament usages of the word "resist" in relation to its use in James 4:7. Following are my notes on it.
Here are the uses of forms of the English word "resist" in the New Testament with the Strong's numbers for the four underlying Hellenic (Greek) words:
anthistemi <436>:
Matthew 5:39* But I say unto you, That ye resist <436> not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Luke 21:15* For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist <436>.
Acts 6:10 And they were not able to resist <436> the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
Acts 13:8* But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood <436> them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
Romans 9:19* Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted <436> his will?
Galatians 2:11* But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood <436> him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
Ephesians 6:13* Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand <436> in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
2 Timothy 3:8* Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood <436> Moses, so do these also resist <436> the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
2 Timothy 4:15 Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood <436> our words.
James 4:7* Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist <436> the devil, and he will flee from you.
1 Peter 5:9 Whom resist <436> stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
antikathistemi <478>:
Hebrews 12:4* Ye have not yet resisted <478> unto blood, striving against sin.
antipipto <496>:
Acts 7:51* Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist <496> the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.
antitassomai <498>:
Acts 18:6* And when they opposed <498> themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.
Romans 13:2* Whosoever therefore resisteth <498> the power, resisteth <436> the ordinance of God: and they that resist <436> shall receive to themselves damnation.
James 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth <498> the proud <5244>, but giveth grace unto the humble.
James 5:6 Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist <498> you.
1 Peter 5:5* Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth <498> the proud <5244>, and giveth grace to the humble.
These four Hellenic (Greek) words translated to the English "resist": anthistemi <436>, antikathistemi <478>, antipipto <496>, and antitassomai <498>. Each is derived from a root prefixed by anti <473>, meaning against, opposite to, instead of, et cetera. "The Complete Word Study Dictionary" by Zodhiates, describes it as having "the general meaning of over against, in the presence of, in lieu of; [s]poken metaphorically either in a hostile sense, meaning against, or by way of comparison, where it implies something of equivalent value, and denotes substitution, exchange, requital."
Antipipto <496> is as against falling down <4098>, being striving with another. Antitassomai <498> is as against an appointed military ruler or commander, see <5021> & <5844>, being doing battle against him. Antikathistemi <478> is as against established authority <2525>, perhaps including customs of the day and experts, contesting them; its root kathistemi <2525> includes histemi <2476>, the root of anthistemi, in its derivation, adding kata <2596> to mean not merely standing, but doing so by authority. Distinguishing anthistemi <436> from these, and especially antikathistemi , it appears to indicate being against standing, against standing one's ground, making an issue over something by one's own account. Perhaps another was to say it is "to ingore," "to pay no attention to," or to "not be affected by."
Does this sense fit into the uses of anthistemi <436>? Let's examine each of the eleven usages in turn:
#1) Matthew 5:39* But I say unto you, That ye resist / ignore <436> not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.
Are we to not ignore evil? Then why would we offer the offender opportunity to do us greater injury? Perhaps because of the princple in Proverbs 25:22-23:
Proverbs 25:
21 ¶ If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
22 For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.
By offering opportunity for greater insult we act according to scripture, bring the injury to light for all to see, confirm the intent of the evil doer, and gain for ourselves rewards. Perhaps too an unintentional injury will be brought to the attention of a brother who unknowingly hurt you, allowing him the opportunity to restore your loss. (Such an approach, it seems to me, sifts the wheat from the chaff and refines as gold your brothers.)
#2) Luke 21:15* For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay <471> nor resist / ignore <436>.
The adversaries will not be able to either speak against (gainsay) <471> or act as if the words were not spoken. "Resist" does not here mean to actively oppose - that is "gainsay" - but to brush off as inconsequential.
#3) Acts 6:10 And they were not able to resist / ignore <436> the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.
The people were not able to ignore the words, they were too powerful.
#4) Acts 13:8* But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood / payed no attention to <436> them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.
Elymas brushed off the arguments of the apostles, and told the deputy what Elymas wanted him to believe.
#5) Romans 9:19* Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted / ignored <436> his will?
Who ignores or pays no attention to God's will?
#6) Galatians 2:11* But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood <436> him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
Did Paul snub Peter to his face or get in his face and oppose him? I think Paul acted like Peter wasn't there.
#7) Ephesians 6:13* Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand / not be affected <436> in the evil day, and having done all, to stand <2476>.
Here are a few following verses, notice that the armour is defensive, not active, in nature:
14* Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15* And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16* Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17* And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
The armour is so that we will not be affected by, and can ignore, the wicked ones' attacks. The armour quenches the attacks that we need not react, and with the word of God, with which to attack, will allow us to histemi <2476> or stand.
#8) 2 Timothy 3:8* Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood / ignored <436> Moses, so do these also resist <436> the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.
Jannes and Jambres ingored the truth just as Elymas did.
#9) 2 Timothy 4:15 Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood / ignored <436> our words.
At 2 Timothy 4:3-4 it declares that some just ignore his (Paul's) words:
2 Timothy 4:
3* For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
4* And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
This is in agreement with verse 4:15 where he declares Alexander the coppersmith "greatly withstood" Paul's words, being unaffected by them, and then worked to turn the peoples' ears to fables.
#10) James 4:7* Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist / pay no attention to <436> the devil, and he will flee from you.
Do not pay attention to the devil. I think this speaks to the fact that the devil loves to goad us into arguing with him, so just ingore him. This is similar to Michael the archangel's response to Satan - he didn't bother arguing with him:
Jude 1:9* Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
#11) 1 Peter 5:9 Whom resist / remain unaffected <436> stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
Ignore the afflictions heaped upon you, do not let them affect you, and remain stedfast.
All of these eleven uses make sense (to me) by interpreting anthistemi <436> as ignoring another's words or actions. This does not mean one is to pretend the devil(s) do not exist at all, but that the best way to deal with their attacks is to ignore them.
