Traits of False Teachers - False Prophets
Compiled by: Myron David

Throughout the scriptures, there are many warnings to the children of Israel to beware of false teachers and false prophets. These false teachers and false prophets will mislead multitudes in the latter days. The scriptures instruct us in the traits for us to recognize false teachers and false prophets.

The Old Testament references are to be found in the Septuagint and The New Testament, Anointed Standard Translation.  (Note: "Elohim" is usually translated as "God", and IAUE as "The Lord".)

And if there arise within thee a prophet, or one who dreams a dream, and he gives thee a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder come to pass which he spoke to thee, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye know not; ye shall not hearken to the words of that prophet, or the dreamer of that dream, because IAUE thy Elohim tries you, to know whether ye love your Elohim with all your heart and with all your soul. Ye shall follow IAUE your Elohim, and fear him, and ye shall hear his voice, and attach yourselves to him. And that prophet or that dreamer of a dream, shall die;

Deuteronomy, XIII:1-5

Whatsoever words that prophet shall speak in the name of IAUE, and they shall not come true, and not come to pass, this is the thing which IAUE has not spoken; that prophet has spoken wickedly: ye shall not spare him.

Deuteronomy, XVIII:22

Then IAUE said to me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name : I sent them not, and I commanded them not, and I spoke not to them: for they prophesy to you false visions, and divinations, and auguries, and devices of their own heart. Therefore, thus saith IAUE concerning the prophets that prophesy lies in my name, and I sent them not, who say, Sword and famine shall not be upon this land; they shall die by a grievous death, and the prophets shall be consumed by famine. And the people to whom they prophesy, they also shall be cast out in the streets of Jerusalem, because of the sword and famine; and there shall be none to bury them: their wives also, and their sons, and their daughters shall die thus; and I will pour out their wickedness upon them.

Jeremias, XIV:14-16

Thus saith IAUE the Almighty, Hearken not to the words of the prophets: for they frame a vain vision for themselves; they speak from their own heart, and not from the mouth of IAUE. They say to them that reject the word of IAUE, There shall be peace to you; and to all that walk after their own lusts, and to every one that walks in the error of his heart, they have said, No evil shall come upon thee. For who has stood in the counsel of IAUE and seen his word? who has hearkened, and heard? Behold, there is an earthquake from IAUE, and anger proceeds to a convulsion, it shall come violently upon the ungodly. And IAUE's wrath shall return no more, until he have accomplished it, and until he have established it, according to the purpose of his heart: at the end of the days they shall understand it. I sent not the prophets, yet they ran: neither spoke I to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my counsel, and if they had hearkened to my words, then would they have turned my people from their evil practices.

Jeremias, XXIII:16-22

I have heard what the prophets say, what they prophecy in my name, saying falsely, I have seen a night vision. How long shall these things be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies, when they prophesy the purposes of their own heart? who devise that men may forget my law by their dreams, which they have told every one to his neighbour, as their fathers forgot my name in the worship of Baal. The prophet who has a dream, let him tell his dream; and he in whom is my word spoken to him, let him tell my word truly: what is the chaff to the corn? so are my words, saith IAUE. Behold, are not my words as fire? saith IAUE; and as an axe cutting the rock?

Jeremias, XXIII:26-29

Thus saith Elohim, Woe to them that prophesy out of their own heart, and who see nothing at all. Thy prophets, O Israel, are like foxes in the deserts. They have not continued steadfast, and they have gathered flocks against the house of Israel, they that say, In the day of Elohim, have not stood, seeing false visions, prophesying vanities, who say, Elohim saith, and Elohim has not sent them, and they began to try to confirm the word. Have ye not seen a false vision? and spoken vain prophecies? And therefore say:

Jezekiel, XIII:3-8

Thus saith IAUE; Because your words are false, and your prophecies are vain, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith IAUE. And I will stretch forth my hand against the prophets that see false visions, and those that utter vanities: they shall not partake of the instructions of my people, neither shall they be written in the roll of the house of Israel, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel; and they shall know that I am IAUE. Because they have caused my people to err, saying, Peace; and there is no peace; and one builds a wall, and they plaster it,-it shall fall.

Jezekiel, XIII:8-10

And I will accomplish my wrath upon the wall, and upon them that plaster it; it shall fall: and I said to you, The wall is not, nor they that plaster it, even the prophets of Israel, who prophesy concerning Jerusalem, and who see visions of peace for her, and there is no peace, saith IAUE.

Jezekiel, XIII:15-16

And thou, son of man, set thy face firmly against the daughters of thy people, that prophesy out of their own heart; and prophesy against them. And thou shalt say, Thus saith IAUE, Woe to the women that sew pillows under every elbow, and make kerchiefs on the head of every stature to pervert souls ! The souls of my people are perverted, and they have saved souls alive.

Jezekiel, XIII:17-18

For the speakers have uttered grievous things, and the diviners have seen false visions, and they have spoken false dreams, they have given vain comfort: therefore, have they fallen away like sheep, and been afflicted, because there was no healing.

Zacharias, X:2

But the people turned not until they were smitten, and they sought not IAUE. So IAUE took away from Israel the head and tail, great and small, in one day: the old man, and them that respect persons, this is the head; and the prophet teaching unlawful things, he is the tail. And they that pronounce this people blessed shall mislead them; and they mislead them that they may devour them. Therefore IAUE shall not take pleasure in their young men, neither shall he have pity on their orphans or on their widows: for they are all transgressors and wicked and every mouth speaks unjustly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is yet exalted.

Esais, IX:13-17

Thus saith IAUE concerning the prophets that lead my people astray, that bite with their teeth, and proclaim peace to them; and when nothing was put into their mouth, they raised up war against them: therefore there shall be night to you instead of a vision, and there shall be to you darkness instead of prophecy; and the sun shall go down upon the prophets, and the day shall be dark upon them. And the seers of night-visions shall be ashamed, and the prophets shall be laughed to scorn: and all the people shall speak against them, because there shall be none to hearken to them. Surely I will strengthen myself with the Spirit of IAUE, and of judgment, and of power to declare to Jacob his transgressions, and to Israel his sins.

Mich¾as, III:5-8

Hear now these words, ye chiefs of the house of Jacob, and the remnant of the house of Israel, who hate judgment, and pervert all righteousness; who build up Sion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity. The heads thereof have judged for gifts, and the priests thereof have answered for hire, and her prophets have divined for silver: and yet they have rested on IAUE, saying, Is not IAUE among us? no evil shall come upon us. Therefore on your account Sion shall be ploughed as a field, and Jerusalem shall be as a storehouse of fruits, and the mountain of the house as a grove of the forest.

Mich¾as, III:9-12

Her prophets are light and scornful men: her priests profane the holy things, and sinfully transgress the law.

Sophonias, III:4

But take care concerning the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but within they are plundering wolves. From their fruits, you will know them. Neither do they gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles. So every good tree produces good fruit, but the corrupt tree produces evil fruits.

Matthew, 7:15-17

For false-Anointeds and false-prophets will arise, and they will give great signs and wonders, so as to cause to err, if possible, even the chosen. Behold, I tell you beforehand. If then they say to you, 'Behold,he is in the wilderness,' do not go forth; 'Behold, in the private rooms,' do not be persuaded.

Matthew, 24:24-26

Paul said to Barjesus, a judean who was a false prophet:
"O son of the Diabolical One, full of all deceit and of all cunning, enemy of all justice, will you not stop perverting the right ways of the Master? And now, behold, the hand of the Master is on you, and you will be blind, not seeing the sun until a time."

Acts, 13:10

Watch, lest anyone should despoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary teachings of the world order, and not according to the Anointed.

Colossians, 2:8

As I begged you to remain in Ephesus-me going to Macedonia-that you might charge certain ones not to teach other teachings, nor to attend to fables and to endless genealogies, which provide doubts rather than a stewardship of Elohim in persuasion, but the end of the commandment is honorable brotherly love, out of a racially pure heart, and a good conscience and unpretended persuasion, which, some missing the mark, turned aside to empty talking, wanting to be teachers of law, understanding neither what they say nor what things they strongly affirm about.

I Timothy, 1:3-7

If anyone teaches differently, and assents not to sound words, those of our Master Jesus Anointed, and the teaching according to godliness, he has been clothed in absurd conceit, understanding nothing, but is mentally ill concerning doubts and warring with words, out of which comes envy, strife, blasphemies, evil suspicions, meddling, of men whose mind has been mongrelized and deprived of the truth, supposing gain to be godliness. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we have brought nothing into the world, that neither can we carry anything out. But having food and clothing, with these things shall we be satisfied, but those resolving to be rich fall into temptation and a trap, and many hurtful and foolish lusts, which cause men to sink into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils, of which some having lust after were seduced from the persuasion, and they themselves pierced through many pains.

I Timothy, 6:3-10

But false prophets were also among the people, as also there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in heresies of destruction, and denying the Despot who has bought them, bringing on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, by whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. And by greediness, with fabricated words, they will use you for gain, - for whom the judgment of old does not linger, and their destruction does not slumber.

II Peter, 2:1-3

Beloved, do not be persuaded by every mentality, but test the mentalities, if they are of Elohim, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world. By this know the Mentality of Elohim: every mentality which confesses that Jesus Anointed has come in flesh is from Elohim. And every mentality which does not confess that Jesus has come in flesh is not of Elohim; and this is the anti-Anointed which you heard is coming, and is now already in the world. Little children, you are of Elohim and have overcome them, because the One in you is greater than the One in the world. They are of the world, therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them. We are of Elohim; the one knowing Elohim hears us; he who is not of Elohim does not hear us. From this we know the Mentality of Truth and the mentality of error.

I John, 4:1-6

And the beast was seized, and with this, the false prophet doing signs before it, by which he led astray those having received the mark of the beast, and those worshiping it images. The two were thrown alive into the Lake of Fire, burning with brimstone.

The Revelation, 19:20

Traits for which to look to recognize false teachers-false prophets, and is one who:

Read II Peter chapter 2.

Black's Law Dictionary, 3rd Edition, page 1524, has the following definitions:

Religious Impostors. In English Law. Those who falsely pretend an extraordinary commission from heaven, or terrify and abuse the people with false denunciations of judgment; they are punishable with fine, imprisonment, and infamous corporal punishment. 4 Broom & H. Comm. 71.

Religious Society. A body of persons associated for the purpose of maintaining religious worship. The commandments of a denomination who statedly attend services in the church edifice. Fiske v. Beaty, 201 N.Y.S. 441, 206 App.Div. 349. A church and society are often united in maintaining worship, and in such cases the society commonly owns the property, and makes the pecuniary contract with the minister. But, in many instances, societies exist without a church, and churches without a society. Silsby v. Barlow, 16 Gray (Mass.) 330; Weld v. May, 9 Cush. (mass.) 188; Hebrew Free School Ass'n v. New York, 4 Hun *N.Y.) 449.

Note on who is the Despot:

I argued with Myron when he wrote the above because he wanted to replace "Despot" in the text with "Diabolical One" and I asserted that rather it was Jesus who had bought us with His Blood. I prevailed upon Myron to put in his remark as a parenthetical note by pointing out he would otherwise not be reproducing the text of the scripture faithfully.
I have decided to add this note, while leaving Myron's work "as is," to formally and publicly oppose his assertion. The King James Version (Authorized Version) has this for 2 Peter 2:1:

¶ But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord <1203> that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

The KJV translates despotes as "the Lord" here; it is also used in Luke 2:29, Acts 4:24, 2 Timothy 2:21 (as "master"), (here,) Jude 1:4, and Revelation 6:10 in reference to God/Elohim. The only other uses of despotes are for Earthly "masters" in 1 Timothy 6:1 & 2, Titus 2:9, and 1 Peter 2:18.

See also:

1 Corinthians 6:20* For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.
1 Corinthians 7:23 Ye are bought with a price; be not ye the servants of men.

We have been bought by Jesus Anointed and have not been sold.

Thus, 2 Peter 2:1 refers to Master Jesus Anointed, and to no other.
