Old Earth Ice Mantle

The Earth once had an ice canopy or mantle, that was destroyed at the time of Noah's flood.

The first clue is in the account of Noah's flood where the fountains of the deep are broken up; ice is broken, not water. And then it says "the windows of heaven were opened;" I believe these are just two aspects of the same event: the mantle is broken up, and the "window" is opened (the ice mantle no longer blocks the view into space). A similar connection can be made in Gen 8:2.

Genesis 7:11* ¶ In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Genesis 8: 2* The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;

In Proverbs, there is the reference to a compass upon the face of the deep. This refers to something that encompassed the Earth, set against the "face of the deep," which can only be deep space.

Proverbs 8:27 When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:

In Isaiah, God speaks of the heavens as a curtain and a tent; this enclosure suggests the ice mantle.

Isaiah 40:22* It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in:

The book of Job has two reference to the ice mantle, the first saying it is something hard and as molten glass.

Job 37:18* Hast thou with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?

The second reference in Job is at Job 38:30, saying it is water as stone, that is ice; that water is "hid" or added to it; also saying explicitly that it is frozen. Additionally, in context (Job 38:25-36), one sees that the passage is speaking about things first under the ground (v. 25), then things on the ground (v. 26-27), then things in the air (v. 28-29), then the ice mantle (v. 30), and then the stars of the heavens (v. 31-32). (Verses 33-36 talk about non-physical things: ordinances, dominion, the voice, sending lightnings, wisdom, and understanding.) The ordering cannot be without intent, again indicating the ice is between the atmosphere and the stars: a mantle over the Earth.

Job 38:
25* ¶ Who hath divided a watercourse for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder;
26 To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, wherein there is no man;
27 To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender herb to spring forth?
28* Hath the rain a father? or who hath begotten the drops of dew?
29* Out of whose womb came the ice? and the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it?
30 The waters are hid as with a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.
31* Canst thou bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion?
32* Canst thou bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or canst thou guide Arcturus with his sons?
33* Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
34 Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover thee?
35 Canst thou send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto thee, Here we are?
36 Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts? or who hath given understanding to the heart?

One can hardly argue, given the multiple referenees, against the belief that an ice mantle once existed above the atmosphere and which encompassed the Earth.
