Begotten of Above

John 3:3* Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born<1080> again<509>, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

The words "born again" in the verse above, also in John 3:7 and 1 Peter 1:23, should be translated "begotten of above" rather than "born again". To be "born" is through one's mother but to "beget" done by a father. Those saved through Christ are begotten spirits as the Father is Spirit.

Consider John 3:3-13, also 1 Peter 1:3 and 1 Peter 1:23.

John 3:
3* Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born<1080> again<509>, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4* Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born<1080> when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born<1080>?
5* Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born<1080> of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6* That which is born<1080> of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born<1080> of the Spirit is spirit.
7* Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born<1080> again<509>.
8* The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born<1080> of the Spirit.
9* Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10* Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11* Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12* If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13* And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

1 Peter 1:3* ¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again<313> unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
1 Peter 1:23
* Being born[begat] again<313>, not of corruptible seed<4701>, but of incorruptible<862>, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

The word gennao <1080> translated "born" is derived from genos <1085> which refers to kindred, offspring, family, stock. As family decent is reckoned through the father, it is clear the meaning of gennao should be confined to "beget", the male part of reproduction. This is confirmed at 1 Peter 1:23 where it refers to "seed" (which comes from a father). Gennao, in the sense it is being used in these verses, should be "begotten". When one is begotten of the Spirit, one is anagennao <313> or (loosely) "begat within" by the incorruptible seed of God as a new creature, risen from the dead, and begins to speak in accordance with the Spirit. (See John 3:8.)

The word anothen <509> translated "again" is derived from ano<507> which means "up, upwards, above, on high", and anothen, especially in the things which come from God, should be confined to the first sense of "from above, from a higher place". So anothen, as used in these verses, should be rendered "of above" or maybe "from above." Jesus tells us he speaks of heavenly things in John 3:11-13, confiming this.

Who's your Father? Are you a new creature begotten by the Father or simply expelled again from your's mother womb? If ye are Jesus Christ's, ye are his brother having been begotten from His own Father. The world which hates God and wishes to elevate a woman to His place of honor renders these words as "born again." But it is our Father in heaven Who has given us Life, not any other. Those saved through Christ are begotten of above by God, through baptism into Christ and by the Word of God, not as the Pharisee Nicodemus misunderstood as "born again."

1 Corinthians 3:9* For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.
1 Corinthians 15:45* And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
John 4:24* God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
Galatians 2:20* I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
Romans 8:10-11 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11* But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
1 Peter 2:2* As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:
1 John 3:9* Whosoever is born<1080>/begotten of God doth not commit sin; for his [God's] seed remaineth in him [whosoever is begotten]: and he cannot sin, because he is born<1080>/begotten of God.

Those saved by Christ are begotten of the Father, who is Spirit, and we are likewise spirits. We are therefore not "born again" after the flesh, but begotten from our Father above after the Spirit to be His children and brothers to Christ.
