The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Greensboro, NC, February 2008 to now, as Manager, Client Computing Architecture, supervise (1) the production and maintenance of images defining UNCG desktop and virtual computers, and (2) application delivery. April 2006 to February 2008, as Technology Support Specialist in Information Technology Services, performed project management, campus-wide Level 2+ support in web design, web programming, and other duties as assigned.
Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, NC, August 2004 to April 2006. As Student Services Technology Director (Computing Consultant III), managed projects including an online student housing application, assisted all Division of Student Affairs users with computer-related needs, and maintained the divisional website.
North Carolina Department of Corrections, Kernersville, NC, July to August 2004. As Telecommunications Equipment Technician II, supported use of Windows by several hundred users in a multi-county region.
Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, NC, May 2001 to July 2004. As Systems Administrator II for the C. G. O'Kelly Library, managed projects, modified and created web pages. Installed, maintained, and administered about 170 Windows workstations in a switched network environment for staff and public use. Trained staff and students on computer use. Served as one of several administrators for several Windows NT 4.0 servers. Installed and maintained software including Microsoft Office 2000 Suite, Fortres, Clean Slate, Netscape, Acrobat, Dreamweaver MX, Fireworks MX, FrontPage, telnet clients, Ghost, Innovative Interfaces Millenium products, and others. Planned for computing service expansion and propose new equipment purchases. Acted as liaison to campus Information Resources. Implemented group and resource scheduling using Outlook 2000 and Exchange Server 5.5. Increased the percentage of usable computers from 60% to 100% in two months. At home, operated a multiboot Windows 2000 Advanced Server/ Novell Netware 5/ Red Hat Linux 9/ MS-DOS 6.22 server with Windows 2000 Pro and Linux clients; and Internet Information Services (IIS) 5 and Apache 2.0 web servers (serving www.wallysanford.com).
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Greensboro, NC, April 2000 to April 2001. As Systems Administrator I for the Book Store, maintained and operated one Windows NT 4.0 server, two Novell Netware 4.2 servers, one IBM AIX 4.3 server, two Windows 2000 Professional workstations, and 10 Windows NT 4.0 workstations on Ethernet. Performed all computer backup, installation, maintenance, network administration, desktop support, and user training. Served as bookstore Webmaster. Provided desktop support to 12 employees. Supervised three staff members. Operated a Windows 2000 Advanced Server network with UNIX, Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Pro clients.
Sanford Consulting, Durham, NC, April 1997 to April 2000. As Vice-President, provided consulting and research services in information technology and environmental management, with a focus on network administration and air quality regulatory development. Created web sites. Installed and administered Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 Advanced Server networks. Consulted with EC/R Incorporated supporting the United States Environmental Protection Agency Office of Air Quality, Planning, and Standards (USEPA/OAQPS) in the development of National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) for the semiconductor manufacturing and the rubber tire manufacturing industries. Consulted with INDUS Corporation supporting the production of Windows-based software to evaluate performance of publicly owned waste water treatment plants for the New England Interstate Environmental Training Commission (NEIETC).
ViGYAN/INDUS Corporation, Durham, NC, August 1995 to May 1997. As Office Manager/Senior Scientist, managed the Durham office and supervised contractor assistance to the USEPA/OAQPS for NESHAP development for the semiconductor and rubber tire manufacturing industries. Installed Windows NT 4.0 servers and Windows 9X workstations. Prepared emission inventory databases and permits for clients including the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Supervised the production of Windows based software to evaluate performance of publicly owned waste water treatment plants for the NEIETC. Developed web sites. Assisted in the novation of contracts after the acquisition of ViGYAN Federal Systems by INDUS.
ICF Kaiser Engineers, Inc., Research Triangle Park, NC, October 1994 to July 1995. As Senior Scientist, performed permitting, database development, compliance, and inventory work for industrial clients. Installed Windows clients to a Sun Solaris UNIX server. Consulted with staff and clients on computer techniques and upcoming regulatory requirements.
Research Triangle Institute, Research Triangle Park, NC, November 1991 to September 1994. As Research Environmental Scientist, intoduced Microsoft Project for a multi-million dollar contract with several projects, installed and managed a thirty-one user Windows/Digital VMS VAX computer network. Trained and supported computer users. Supervised development of air quality standards. All projects ahead of schedule and below budget with excellent evaluations.
NC Division of Environmental Management, Raleigh, NC, January 1978 through October 1991. As Environmental Chemist II, installed and administered a twenty-one user computer network using an IBM OS/2 LAN Manager v1.0 server and Windows 3.X clients on Token Ring. Permitted and inspected pollution sources, maintaining correspondence and a database on compliance and enforcement. Supervised three environmental technicians operating ambient monitoring instruments using modem-based telemetry in a sixteen county region. Developed databases, operating instructions, quality assurance procedures, and computer programs, including the only computer program to win both the State and Departmental productivity awards. Installed hardware and trained staff in computer operation. Installed computers, modems, and associated telemetry devices for ambient air quality monitoring instruments.
