WALC is a non-profit, non-sectarian volunteer organization dedicated to teaching people to read, write, and speak the English language. WALC has served Whittier and adjacent communities since 1962.
To provide literacy and ESL tutoring programs for adults and children who are in need of better skills and to train volunteers to perform these services.
Community volunteers do all the tutoring.
The core materials emphasize phonics and are used internationally to teach literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL).
WALC is funded by the City of Whittier, personal donations, local service organizations, fund raisers, membership dues, and grants.
