Nash Bridges On Occasion

Below are descriptions of the many encounters I've had with the
Nash Bridges film crew.
Wild Parrots of S.F.

Tuesday, Apr. 27, 1999 - Location: Powell Sreet - Title: "Goodbye Kiss" - Airdate: May 14, 1999
Back again to continue filming Goodbye Kiss, I suppose. I couldn't get out to get close to the action, but I caught the Cuda and a camera car (separately) going by outside my window. It wasn't even DJ driving the Cuda.

Hey, guess who came back to Caitlin's place again! Upon returning home from several days at Lake Tahoe, I noticed the telltale No Stopping signs indicating that the NB crew would be visiting my neighborhood again, less than a month after their last visit. DJ was there again. So was Yasmine. And this time there was a special guest star!

Once again, the big yellow doors were used. The Cuda was used briefly while I was present - I don't remember if I saw Don driving it; I'll have to check the video. I shot plenty of video of DJ standing and sitting around; walking and talking (on his cell phone and to the crew); tossing a bottle of water into the air; and partaking in a very bad habit that I shall not name (cough, cough!).

Romance blossoms (?): Who brought flowers to whom? Well, someone in this scene stood outside of Caitlin's place holding a lovely bunch of flowers and a suitcase. Who? You'll find out soon enough!

In addition to the big yellow doors, a generic yellow taxi also appears in the scene. Not as nice a shade of yellow as a real yellow taxi, in my humble opinion. So there!

Strangely, my friend Yasmine remained across the street from me on this day. I'll cry later.

Amusing coincidence, isn't it? I mean, that Caitlin's home should be just a block and a half from the home of the guy (me) who created this site, Nash Bridges On Location. It amuses me - and it should you, too!

Thursday-Friday, Mar. 25-26, 1999 - Location: Powell Sreet - Title: "Vendetta" - Airdate: Apr. 23, 1999
Yes, they returned to Caitlin's place on Powell Street, only this time DJ also was there. On Thursday, Yasmine went in and out through the big yellow doors. Don was present that evening to shoot a scene in which he drives the Cuda away from Caitlin's place. Later, an actor dressed in black pretended to be breaking into Caitlin's home through....you guessed it...the big yellow doors!

On Friday, I was once again able to videotape DJ and Cheech from my window. They backed up the Cuda a couple of times, just far enough to come into view so I could catch them on tape as they drove back down the street and out of view.

Later on, Don and Cheech went inside an old, abandoned brewery just down the street, less than a block from my place. Later that evening, as I headed home, I found myself walking between my building and a long row of production trailers, and I noticed a girl in a brown sweater and black pants walking alone a few yards ahead of me. It was my old friend, Yasmine! We keep running into each other! She went to open the door of the last trailer, then paused and said, "Nobody..." -- she apparently mistook me for someone on the crew and started to speak to me, until she knew better. We briefly looked at one another and then she walked back down the sidewalk, as I continued on my way home. It kind of reminds me of that scene in which Caitlin was chased by the bad guy (see Nov. 6 below), only in this case, Yasmine had nothing to worry about.

Later that evening, I looked down from my third-floor window and saw that Yasmine's other trailer was directly below my window! Eventually, her gold Town Car came and took her to the set, a building on the opposite side of the block from the brewery. I believe DJ also was there, but all the action was taking place on the inside. Soon, I saw Yasmine leave her trailer and ride off into the darkness in her nice golden car.

That's my most recent brush with fame - and Yasmine Bleeth.

Friday, Nov. 6, 1998 - Location: Powell Sreet - Title: "Mystery Dance" (I think) - Airdate: Dec. 18, 1998
I hadn't planned on another Nash encounter so soon, but they went and returned to exactly the same place in my neighborhood where they'd been just a week before. The only cast member I recognized was Yasmine Bleeth....just like last Friday! She walked down a sidewalk, then ran back with a man chasing her. Later that evening they did some stunts with a guy and two cars.

I brought my camcorder and starting chatting with a very friendly security guard, whom I'll call Charlie. I think he was more excited about all of it than I was. As I stood near a bench, talking to Charlie, I saw Yasmine coming around the corner. I happened to be standing right where her starting position was to be. Charlie's boss accompanied Yasmine and told me to move back several yards. I started to move, then realized I'd left my camera case on the bench. I went back for it, but there was very little space between Yasmine and the bench, so I brushed against her. Accidentally, I promise.

I was never into Babewatch, and never a fan of Yasmine's. I'm just telling you all this to make her male fans envious. That's my brush with fame.

Don and Cheech were there to film a scene in which they're inside a building (supposed to be a radio station), near the exit, talking or arguing with a man (the D.J.) behind a desk, and a man with a machine gun shows up and aims the gun, but he didn't fire it while I was there. Through a large window I could see Don get down on the floor to avoid the bullets.

You should've seen the extra playing a bystander who sees the gun and runs to safety....fast runner, that guy! I don't think you ever saw him in the actual episode. The camera was inside with Don and Cheech while I was there. The gunman's old red pick-up truck was parked near the Cuda.

I only got one blurry photo of DJ, but I got a good one of the Cuda, as well as DJ's black Town Car. I was recognized by at least one crew member....and one cop, I think. I was also told that I was making people nervous by standing too close to the Town Car with my bike. Ha ha, it works both ways! Eventually, I got tired of being told to move here, move there....so I went home. I was freezing my butt off anyway.

Yes, they're back in my neighborhood again. The only cast member I recognized was Yasmine Bleeth. She entered and exited a building several times through a large yellow door. I had my camcorder with me and caught a little bit of her on videotape. I stood across the street and zoomed in for some close-ups.

At one point, an actor dressed like an airline pilot exited the building for several takes. Once, when Yasmine opened the door and went inside, I thought I heard children. I was across the street, standing right in front of Francisco Middle School (where I once was a student) during school hours, so I was hearing kids the whole time. So were the crew members, who asked a couple of boys in a third-floor window to be as quiet as possible. I couldn't be sure if there were kids inside the residence Caitlin entered until I saw them in the episode.

I don't think the crew has returned to my neighborhood to use Caitlin's new home since Yasmine returned on November 6 to shoot another episode. I can't help speculating that I've scared them away by telling them they were in my neighborhood.

They were setting up a shootout scene involving stuntmen at a motel. That's what I was told. It was to take place later that evening. It was already dark and chilly, so I didn't stick around. After seeing this episode, I'm assuming that Jaime and Jeff were there at some point.
Monday, Oct. 19, 1998 - Location: Mission and 3rd
I rode over to Yerba Buena Gardens and asked a crew member "Who's here today?". Well, it turns out Don Johnson was supposed to be there, but he never showed up! The crew had set everything up, unloaded trucks, etc. . .but the star was nowhere in sight. I arrived after 1 PM. But I imagine the crew waited around alot longer than that. Of course, it turned out to be a very nice day, as far as the weather was concerned, with temperatures in the 80's. Who can blame Don for not wanting to spend such a day playing to the camera, right? They probably don't pay him enough, anyway.

I approached an older guy wearing a headset (and looking a little more important than the average crew member) and I mentioned DJ not showing up. The guy then asked me, "Do you know where he is?".
Puzzled, I replied, "Do I know where he is? Enjoying the weather?". The man kind of smiled and nodded, then turned away. That was the end of that.

Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 - Location: Mason and California - Title: "Warplay" - Airdate: Nov. 13, 1998
I rode my bike to Nob Hill and found Cheech, Jaime and Jeff filming a scene outside a fancy hotel. I arrived early in the afternoon and saw a guy who looked alot like Evan in a red jacket, looking like a typical S.F. cop. He was standing nearby, talking on a cell phone. I grabbed my camera and went to take a picture.....nothing happened! My camera indicated that a couple of exposures still remained, so I was convinced that my batteries were dead and that I'd have to go back home for fresh ones, since I hadn't brought enough money to buy new batteries. But first I decided to try loading the spare roll of film I'd brought along. That remedied the problem. Thank goodness for that. . .I didn't want to have to climb back up to that location a second time!

So I waited around a little longer until they began shooting the scene. Cheech, Jeff and Jaime took their positions near a yellow taxi. They chased a guy. . .and then a briefcase fell from the sky. That's the scene. For every take, someone either threw a silver briefcase into the air or dropped it from a tall ladder. This is because, in the episode, the fleeing character gets hit by a car and the case is sent flying into the air. The actor being chased must also be a stuntman, because he was the one perched atop a very tall stepladder, repeatedly dropping the case onto the hood of a car so that it would bounce off and land in front of Cheech, et al. One can assume he was also the guy who bounced himself off the hood of the car. I didn't see them film the collision scene.

After a couple of takes, a strange thunder filled the sky. This happened to be a day when the Blue Angels jets were rehearsing their stunt-flying shows for the weekend. I asked a crew member if they'd been expecting this noise. She said no. The jets had also flown on the preceding day, but apparently nobody had told NB Productions that they'd also be flying on Friday. Funny, huh? Anyway, after a 10-minute lunch break, the filming resumed, despite the jets roaring overhead. I took a bunch of photos, some of them good.

Mason Street, by the way, is the same street on which I videotaped that scene from Shake, Rattle and Roll.

Monday, Oct. 5, 1998 - Location: The Presidio
Knowing that they'd be filming in the Presidio this day, I rode out there, not really expecting to find anything (the Presidio's a big place). It's a good thing I didn't get my hopes up, because I went home empty-handed, more or less. I did find the location (basecamp, etc.) and I was told that Cheech was there, but I couldn't get anywhere near him. The day went as follows:

Having covered less than half of the Presidio, I was on my way out when I spotted some lighting equipment outside a building and a guy sitting in the back of a truck. I asked him about the old and new SIU sets and he told me they'd started the new season using the old Eureka set, but now they're using a new set on a barge at Pier 30-32. I'd previously heard it would be at Treasure Island. Whatever.

The guy also told me that the filming was currently being done at the nearby abandoned Letterman hospital. So I pedaled right over there, only to learn that they were shooting inside the building, so there was no chance to see or photograph any stars. But I did photograph the hospital.

Thursday, Oct. 1, 1998 - Location: Around Harrison and 11th
Riding home on a bus, I looked out and saw what looked as if it might be the camera car they use for scenes in which the Barracuda is being driven. Then I saw two yellow 'Cudas, so I was pretty sure that's what it was. I had no camera with me, so I just continued homeward. They were probably all done there, anyway.
Date: No idea (Probably during the 2nd season)
Riding my bike past the Palace of Fine Arts in the Marina District, I found a small crew working on a scene taking place on the steps of someone's house on a corner. Nash, it appeared, was being portrayed by a stand-in. I apparently arrived after the car was blown up, so there wasn't much to see there. I hadn't brought my camera, anyway.
