Though brought up elsewhere (but not far away), I can make the rare claim of being a Native Houstonian, one who ended up Back Home to live and work (when working) and pay off his house and...well, moved away again, but still have my memories, and, as of July 2001, my newly-renovated house has passed into other hands at last, and a good thing, too. One can own too many houses, and it gets confusing, not to mention expensive. So the Houston Era ends, at least on the realty side.
Houston does indeed boast some decent stuff:

Just up South Main from the Old Manse, in the Texas Medical Center:

Baylor School of Medicine
University of Texas School of Medicine - Houston

And Rice University - my Alma Mater (and my Father's and my Mother's and my Aunt's)

Though I got a B.A. in History (not without a struggle), I must give the good word to the Sciences, and particularly Engineering, whose tradition at Rice is well served by The T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S. Project (though its prime supervisor graduated in May '98, the page was brought back by popular, if peculiar demand)

Other Centers of Higher Learning

The University of Houston home of KUHF-FM, my former erstwhile part-time employer, hoorah; take a moment to visit the KUHF-FM Home Page

Here is a little sample of Mark Fowler's semi-radio tones (.au format, 147K),and another (.au format, 105K), recorded with Sound Machine 2.1, using the friendly confines of the KUHF Production Studio.

Texas Southern University
The University of St. Thomas

Houston Community College - where I played Professor (Communications) for a few semesters.
