Maggie's First Litter

The Preparation

         Maggie...planning

After Maggie told us that she would like to have puppies we played match maker for her impending liaison.  Thinking we would have some warning we only had sketchy plans for the "big picture" and were caught ill prepared on the first week of October, 2001...when Maggie informed us she was ready!

We were hoping for something convenient (like artificial insemination) but Maggie wanted to meet her bo in person so we with a quick change of plans we drove all day and into the night to Pfalcon's house in Connecticut.  Although we arrived shortly before dawn the following day, we were greeted with open arms.  Pfalcon and Maggie took to each other immediately, and Pfalcon began to show off.

 The courtship..

.

Pfalcon's entire family made Maggie feel quite welcome so we stay for nearly a week and Andrew played "coach" when necessary.  Maggie also enjoyed the fall foliage and as we all know it is good to have a relaxing vacation now and again!  By the time we had to leave, we were sad to say goodbye.

The first Puppy Picture

This being Maggie's first litter we did not know what to expect so we decided to have an ultrasound; besides we just wanted to know for certain if all of our efforts had born fruit.  Our doctor told us that we would be expecting the happy little bundles of joy to arrive just before Christmas, 2001.

Then Maggie realized the down side of pregnancy...the weight gain...the mood swings...the reduced mobility.  But Maggie was a trooper and tried not to let her moods negatively effect the family before the Christmas season.  She even consented to some obligatory "pregnancy" photos.

Although we were hoping for a weekend whelping, the pups arrived VERY early Monday morning...at about midnight December 16th through 5AM December 6th.

The first four

Maggie Panting between puppies

Although it looked easy, Maggie assures us that it was hard work.  She had her first puppy starting just after midnight and then continued to have one puppy every 10 to 12 minutes.  We could not keep up with her!  Then after cleaning them up, allowing us to weigh them and do other silly things, she nursed them all for a little while.  At which point she was such a trooper she did not even take a break to eat her ice cream.  Finally she let the tired little guys (and girl) go to sleep.

Then she decided to take another break for a few hours before finishing with the last two puppies.  Andrea waited up with her and Andrew went to bed!

The Whole Gang

The new PUPPIES!!!

All 6 were great at nursing right away

Finally Maggie had had enough and she gave birth to the last two puppies after 3 AM.  The puppies nurse immediately, and keep nursing for several minutes.  This time we noted a few more details as the last two puppies came out.  The puppies looked striped when they first are born, because the wet hair apparently streaks down their little backs.  Anyway the last two were easier on me, but Mother and puppies were exhausted. In fact, Andrea was to so she went to bed and Andrew took over.  The 6 little puppies didn't need any help and so from that point on we left everything in Maggie's hands.  Maggie needed our help for the first 24 hours (6 puppies is quite a handful)!  Then she took control from feeding to clean-up, she was the perfect mommy dog.

In fact, they were good at napping and nursing

The First 2 Weeks

The puppies were great for the first two weeks, but looking back, they actually were kind of cute but boring.  Click on the photo to the right to go to the
1-2 Week old Puppy site for cute pictures of rolly-poly puppies

The 3rd Week

Oh boy...their little eyes slowly crept open, and then they took off.  Well, actually they were really slow, but still a whole lot more interesting than for the first 2 weeks. Click on the photo to the right to go to the 3 Week old Puppy site for more puppy pictures.

The 4th Week

Now we were really in for it.  The puppies became more active and more mobile every day.  They started chewing shoe laces, pant legs, shirt sleeves, etc., etc.  Click on the photo to the right to go to the 4 Week old Puppy site for more crazy puppy photos.

And Then...

After week 4 they REALLY started to get their own personalities.  And they got a little crazy.  So, the original plan for week by week web pages has changed into tracking each of the puppies individually.  The following are pages, links, and photos for each puppy in birth order.  They are listed under their new names.  Names given by their families in their new homes!

Lola

The first born was the only girl, and she is the only puppy that stayed here.  She lives in North Carolina with her mom, Maggie and her uncles Zack and Tommy. We almost kept them all...but then we had a moment of sanity and new that it would be better to spread the Vizsla magic rather than hoard it all for ourselves.

Casey

Now lives with his family in Jacksonville, FL; although he summers in Virginia...the lucky dog!  Here he is demonstrating the all weather nature of the Vizsla coat, while his owner has to dress up for a walk on the beach.  Click on this beach shot to see more of Casey and his people.

Click here to see Casey's latest photo (because Casey's owners are very good at sending current shots)!

Phoenix

Lives in Gainesville, FL and goes to the University of Florida (for graduate school)!  Maggie's owners also went to the University of Florida, and both also received degrees from the Department of Zoology.  Go Gators!  And yet, they did not meet Phoenix's new owners at UF.  Anyway here is one of Phoenix's baby shots.  He should be about 1 day old here.  Click on the photo to learn and see more of Phoenix.  By the way, Maggie grew up in Gainesville too, so we can say it is not a bad place to start out!

Max

Lives in Naples, FL with two older canine siblings.  He is busy teaching them the ways of the Vizsla.

Copper

Lives in Palm Harbor, FL in a family with 3 children, and he has no trouble telling the twins apart!

Shooter

Lives in Tampa with 2 Vizsla role models--Uncle Magic and Aunt Ginger.
