Traditional Checkering
Any carved texture, designed to make your grips non-slip, can be considered checkering. And on "Pattern Choices" page 7 you can see a number of sculpted checkering textures, such as fishscale and basketweave. But when most people say "checkering" they are referring to a pattern of raised diamonds formed by engraved intersecting lines.

Traditional checkering textures can vary by lines-per-inch, the angle of line intersection and fancy refinements such as skip-line textures.

But most of the design impact of traditional checkering comes from the shapes of the areas that the texture fills. The variations in the shapes can be endless. Here are a number of examples of such shapes. They are here to give you an idea of what is available and to give you some idea of the price of various types of layouts.

These two are more complicated, with four panel, multi-point layouts.

Design #3     Price - $175
This layout features a wraparound forearm grip and an extra border line.
In this multi-point layout, both panels wrap around.
Starting and stopping the checkering lines means a lot more time and labor. The more small areas the checkering is divided into,
by fleur de'lis and/or ribbons, the higher the price.

Design #1     Price - $150
Design #2     Price - $175
Design #4     Price - $225
Design #5     Price - $275
Design #6     Price - $300
Here the checkered areas are wrap-around, and are broken up by
fleur de'lis and ribbons.
Design #7     Price - $325
This multi-point layout wraps around, has a fleur de'lis, and an added small tail panel near the pistol grip.
Design #8     Price - $350
This first example is a simple, basic, four panel layout.
This example has many small, tight corners to work the checkering around, is a wrap-around, and is framed by hand carved scrollwork.

The carving is best done on finished wood. After the checkering is done, you may apply your favorite finish to the checkered and carved areas. A toothbrush works best for this type of project. If the stock is unfinished, I will apply TruOil Gunstock Finish before and after I carve it.

When sending stocks, PLEASE SEND ONLY THE WOOD. Remove the grip cap or butt plate if you are having the skeleton cap or butt checkered.
