The Forest Service Air Resource Management Program

The Air Program envisions a healthy environment for current and future generations where natural processes can occur. We believe:

The health of humans and ecosystems are inseparable

Clean air is essential

Science is a foundation for taking action

Our mission is to provide sound counsel on air quality issues to Forest Service decision makers.

Under the Clean Air Act, air resource managers have an “affirmative responsibility to protect air quality related values (including visibility)” from the adverse effects of air pollution. This responsibility is carried out by providing information about air quality conditions in our forests to Federal Land Managers and the public; providing advice and technical assistance to state, federal, and tribal regulatory agencies; working cooperatively through partnerships with stakeholders in the development of air pollution control strategies; and promoting pollution prevention practices within our National Forests.
