Family stories indicated that my third great grandfather, Samuel Ewing, born August 12, 1789 in Little Britain Township,
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania was a man of reasonable wealth.
Samuel converted to Mormonism and moved from his Pennsylvania home to join the group heading west. He was
in the Heber Kimball group, entering the Salt Lake Valley in 1847. Samuel's wife Esther (Shaffer) Ewing died August
3, 1847 near Ft. Laramie, Wyoming.
Samuel's exact death date has not been determined, but it was prior to December 1, 1860 when his will was submitted for
probate. Many printed histories state that Samuel died in 1882, but that was when he was re-interred in the Provo City
Cemetery, not his actual death date.
Copies of the probate of his will, included small inheritances to his children. My great grandfather, Anderson
Shaffer Ewing received a horse valued at $75.00.
Samuel Ewing was one of the original pioneers of Provo. He owned several pieces of property. Where was the land
he so diligently tended there?
Thanks to Cheryl Frank, a descendant of John Jackson Ewing, we have another page of the will. Samuel Ewing left
all his real estate and many other valuables to his church.
