SCOOTER

Dog Scootering is a sport where one or more dogs pull a human riding a scooter (unmotorized). It is similar to mushing that is done in the winter snow, but with less dogs (generally) and with a scooter instead of a dogsled. The dogs wear the same harnesses that sled dogs wear, and are hooked to the scooter either in front with a gangline, or at the side with a side rigger.
The gangline more closely resembles the sled mushing style. Most of the same commands are used, although those scootering with their dogs tend to be more relaxed about their commands, sometimes using right and left instead of gee and haw, for example. More training time is required for this style than the side rigger style.
The side rigger Dogpowered Scooter places the dog behind the steering wheel, thus giving the rider precision steering control of the dog as well as brake control. Therefore it is easy to ride,safe and appropriate for the urban environment.This makes dog mushing accessible to every breed, rider age group,location and season.
Scootering with your pet can mean freedom. You can run for miles together. You and your dog will be getting a workout, building strength and aerobic fitness, and enjoying the outdoors together. You will learn to work together as a team and strengthen your bond. You will be providing the dog with much needed exercise which in turn eliminates some problem behaviors caused by lack of exercise. An exercised healthy dog is a Happy Dog.
We are now forming an informal group to meet on the Greenbrier River Trails for regular group outings, picnics, relays and demonstrations.
