Volvo S40 and V40 ABS control unit removal.

  • Loosen two nuts, labeled Ex2, in the diagram below. Don't take them out if you don't have to.
  • Pry away from the ABS block the bracket that was held by Ex2 nut and remove the bolt and nut Ex2. Do this on both sides.
  • Slide away from the connector the latch, labeled D, in the diagram. Keep pulling away until the connector disengages by itself from the ABS control unit. If you use a screwdriver to initially break it free, make sure you apply force a little at a time on one side and then the other side. Take your time and do it slowly. You are "walking" the latch out of the connector.
  • Grab the entire ABS assembly and twist up until you are able to see all six torx, T-20, bolts and the two wire connector.
  • Disconnect the two wire connector. Shown on the left of the diagram below.
  • Don't be afraid to use some force. During installation you will need to push everything back in place.
  • You only need to twist it enough to allow you to get the torx T-20 into the bolts. You may want to ask somebody to hold it while you take the bolts out.
  • Once the bolts are removed, the ABS control unit slides straight out.
  • Be very careful not to twist it, pull it up, down or sideways.
  • You may wiggle it to break it loose but must remove straight away from the ABS block assembly.
