Additional Agency Statistics

content

As part of the increasing professionalization of the anti-piracy effort, the two top computer software agencies have delayed release of their 1995 statistics (as of this writing) to optimize their methodology. The SPA submitted their '95 data to an independent research organization for review. The BSA delay is due not only to their estimating size-of-markets internationally, but also implementing a new and more-accurate methodology. Meanwhile, one can better appreciate their 1994 numbers (see excerpt of BSA materials in QUICK-TAKE below).

The IIPA estimates that 1995 loss of trade due to copyrighted materials outside of the U.S. amounted to 18-20 billion. This figure is reduced by the limited number of countries reported on. The IIPA will revise this figure when the BSA statistics become available.

The Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) will become increasingly involved in the years ahead because concern over revenues lost to piracy is one of the major concerns of their membership. They have also commissioned a study of blackbox pay-per-view and cable piracy which is eagerly awaited.
