Masters of Motocross News - March 31 at Budds Creek
- Sponsored by Fredericktown Yamaha
The first race of the Masters of Motocross series is now in the history books.
I'm going to start off the recap with a routine from the David Letterman show:
Top 10 Reasons to Be Thankful - March 31 Masters of Motocross
- Everyone went home in one piece (as far as I know)
- We had great weather all day
- Track conditions were pretty good in general
- Racing was intense and clean in all the classes I could watch
- All of you came out to participate in the 1st-ever Masters of Motocross race
- Most all of us had fun.
- Everyone voiced positive words even though things didn't go 100% as planned
- I learned some things to do better at upcoming races
- I learned some things not to do again, ever
- In general, the program works! Let's do it again...
I'd like to repeat a couple of those items, starting with thanks
to all of you for joining the series and coming out to race as we get this off the ground. The other thanks I want to repeat is for all the support and
patience you gave yesterday as we struggled with some areas. Finally, special thanks to the following people for
helping to get this off the ground and get the word out:
- Fred Guidi and Rae Tyson of AHRMA-MA, without whom Masters of Motocross probably would not have
happened.
- Dave Hayes/Hayes Racing & Vision Energy Drink
- Hollie Hollis/Cycling East
- Southern Md Dirt Riders/VP Rich Pettit and the SMDR "Webmistress"
- Jon Beasley, for hosting the first Masters of Motocross event of the 2007 season on the track
that will host both an AMA National and the Motocross of Nations later this year
So what happened? Outside of the good racing that took place
once things got going, the biggest challenge of the day was the number of people attending the combined ACR and Masters of
Motocross event. A normal vintage event has about 150-200 entrants. Yesterday, there
were 474, and it caught everyone off-guard. Compounding that problem were unfamiliarity with Masters Motocross
signup (on both sides of the counter, one of my lessons) and unfamiliarity with ACR classes, which are quite different from
the normal AHRMA program. People were still in signup when practice was planned to begin, and liability
considerations are many if people practice without signing up first. So we were deep in the hole by the time practice
and the first motos began, and ultimately that resulted in short motos in the 2nd set (and some near the end of the 1st).
While I know it wasn't a popular decision (with me or anyone else), I fully support Jon's decision to shorten laps so that
everyone in both the Masters of Motocross and ACR series could get in a 2-moto program that day. Any
different decision, particularly one that resulted in a single moto in a points series race, would have been a total disaster.
Looking Forward... The remainder of the Masters
of Motocross series runs with AHRMA-MA, not ACR, so there is every expectation that we will not experience the excess of participants
and the extra ACR classes going forward. That should put us in very good position to deliver the full-length
motos that are important to all of us.
Pictures & Stories - Got Any You'd Like To Share?
I will be writing up an article for Cycling East, and I'd like to include your thoughts and stories in with the event coverage.
Please e-mail anything you'd like to submit for consideration by e-mail to me sometime in the next week.
I could really use the help with pictures. For pics, please identify the photographer by name and the subject
name (or class, etc) if possible.
Points Standings & Scoring In fairness to people
who weren't familiar with the extra Masters of Motocross signup fee, I've offered to accept applications received through
4/7 and count the March 31 event for anyone who has an app in the PO Box by that time. I have the score
sheets and will recalculate the scores (dropping all riders who aren't in the Masters of Motocross series) next weekend.
After that, we'll get them put up on the AHRMA-MA web site [ www.ahrma-ma.org ] as quickly as possible the following week.
Signup at Tomahawk When when enjoy Chad Gochenour's
Tomahawk facility on May 12, I know things will go much smoother if we use the following class names to sign up:
- Masters 30+ A
- Masters 30+ B
- Masters 30+ C
- Masters 40+ A
- Masters 40+ B
- Masters 45+
- Masters 50+
I'll put out a reminder before that event.
Last But Not Least.... It was good.
It'll get better !!
