Veleka Gray, Actress

Veleka Gray was inducted into the Louisiana Hall of Fame in 2004. She is best known for her work on daytime television. Here she is, top row, second from the left, standing between Erika Slezak and Ruth Warrick, at a fashion show honoring daytime divas.

She won starring roles in six soap operas as nine different characters, two of which, Dr. Sharon Reaves and Ruby, she played concurrently on the same show, "The Young & The Restless." Miss Gray began her acting career at age five on a local children's television show in her home town of New Orleans. In addition to her fifteen years in daytime drama, she has guest-starred in three prime-time shows, had leads in four films, twenty-seven plays, and literally hundreds of commercials. She has also been employed as a singer, dancer, and model in most major cities in the US. As a young adult, she added teaching, directing and writing to her curriculum vitae.

After taping nearly daily on the five soaps she did in New York, Miss Gray often performed at night on or off Broadway, and for six years she penned "Veleka Advises," a bi-weekly personal advice column for "Soap Opera Digest," as well as writing articles for other fan magazines. Her weekends have often been spent publicizing her soaps on talk shows or at festivals, or volunteering time to programs for battered women and children or for ecological organizations, such as the Rainforest Action Network.

For fifteen years, Miss Gray was a Blue Ribbon Panelist (judge) for the National Emmy Awards and was chosen to be a presenter for the Best Director award during her stint on "Love Of Life." Prior to that, she judged the New York City awards for two years. She also served for a term as an AFTRA union delegate during contract negotiations.
