Some Other Resources for Webmasters

A-Prompt is a free accessibility checker for your web site.  This tool is a joint project of the University of Toronto and the University of Wisconsin.

Bravenet has a lot of good tools that you can use to add services to your site despite limitations in your programming ability or your server's functionality.

Browser News is a weekly-updated site designed to keep track of issues concerning all major Web browsers.  A unique resource.

Doctor Watson is another analysis tool to check a number of things about your site, including links and search engine compatibility.

The Free Site is one of the best resources for free and nearly-free software and services.  Updated frequently.  There's a lot to look at here.  It is very hard to not find something that interests you.  You'll find me here a lot.

Gibson Research has a number of unique free and low-cost tools for webmasters, including the Shields Up! utility to check your computer's vulnerability to hackers.  The SpinRite hard drive utility is inexpensive and excellent.

Housecall is a site that will scan your computer on-line to remove any viruses.  Always up-to-date, and it's free.

Internet Content Rating Association (ICRA) is a well-known voluntary labeling program for web sites, with the goal of keeping inappropriate material from being viewed by children.

Corel Software bought out Jasc Software and now offers Paint Shop Pro, a quality graphics program for webmasters on a budget.  I use it for all of my graphics.  Free demo available.

SafeSurf is another voluntary labeling site with goals similar to ICRA.

SitePoint is one of the best forums on the Internet for webmasters.  There are areas for all skill levels.

VirtualPromote (formerly JimWorld) is one of the oldest resource sites for webmasters on the Internet -- and still one of the very best.  If it isn't here, you probably don't need it!

Visicheck is a resource designed to show you how your site appears to someone who is color-blind, and how to correct any problems.  (Since I am color-blind, I can appreciate this!)

Web Pages That Suck teaches you what not to do when you design a web site.  We can learn from bad examples.

Zone Labs is the producer of ZoneAlarm, one of the better personal firewalls available.  A free version is available.  If you have an always-on Internet connection, you should strongly consider this.
