The Scribbler

A speechwriter for eulogies; retirement speeches; wedding or anniversary speeches or toasts (or a poem or limerick); invocations; and many other speeches for awards and honors, groundbreaking ceremonies, thank you's, etc...

I've included with thoughts on several types of speeches, a few words from my customers -- about the words I've composed for them -- to reassure you.

Eulogy:

It is the content, the heart and soul, of one's eulogy which is important (not its length or perfect recall of biographical details). Let me put words to your thoughts and memories -- words that will find their way into a memory book or linger in everyone's minds for years, offering comfort and a lasting tribute.

"It was beautiful!!! Your writing skill is enormous!! Once again, Thank You for making such a painful event so beautiful!!"

"I cannot thank you enough. You have been an enormous help in a difficult time for our family when there are not enough hours in the day. Your words captured their essence and tied the two men together through their joint passions....I am so glad David located you. Wish us luck on Sat." ...From a banking executive, and his wife, for eulogy written for her father and brother.

"Had two calls from Chris' siblings for copies of 'my' remarks at the memorial service. Thanks again!" ...From a business man in a small town, for a tribute written for his best friend.

Retirement Speech:

Whether you need to stand up there and speak of your own retirement, or sing the praises of a colleague or family member, let me give you the words to say (wrapped around a few details you give me), and write them for you in a way that creates rhythm, helps the reading, and encourages meaningful pauses.

"Wow! I like it! You never cease to amaze me. Now I am caught, because I don't want him to retire, but I am eager to give the talk!! It is that good! In traditional Navy lingo, I say "Bravo Zulu" meaning "well done" -- and let me add a BIG thank you!"...From Navy Captain, for the retirement celebration of an officer in her command.

Invocations:

You've been asked to give the invocation -- to a large mixed gathering, or to a closely-knit group. I can write the words to give thanks and invoke a blessing on the purposes or focus of your group -- and with my knowledge of many religious traditions, can give it a particular approach or a generic tone.

"What an incredible gift you have! This is perfect. I personally was moved just by reading it. Thank you for your hard work. I will drop the check in the mail tomorrow. I really can't thank you enough."...From human resources manager for invocation written for annual luncheon

Wedding or Anniversary Speeches or Toasts,
Poems, and Limericks:

If you want to say something memorable on the special day of someone you love, let me bring your thoughts to life, and give them rhythm or rhyme, and ease of delivery.

"It was great. You are great. Two people came up to me and said they had goose bumps at the end. Most importantly, Larry was moved. I owe you much more than you charged."

"Larry called me today just to tell me--once more--how touched he was by your speech." (From an attorney....for his friend's 40th birthday party. He wanted it to be encouraging.

Other Speeches:

There are many occasions. A thank you speech for an award, or induction into a high school or university Hall of Fame, a ground-breaking ceremony or the ribbon-cutting of a new bank or park, the sweet poems to family at a Bar or Bat Mitzva, a university Valedictorian speech....the list goes merrily on, and I can help.

"Thanks for everything! The speech was delivered yesterday, and although I was extremely nervous it worked out just fine. I received numerous compliments on the speech, everything from, "It was from the heart," to the following email I received:

'Your speech is right up there with the Gettysburg Address! Really it is just amazing - I don't know how you worded it so well!! I can concentrate better now than yesterday and I can't get over it. You delivered it so well also.' (From a man for his daughter's Jewish baby naming ceremony.)

The Scribbler will compose an original speech which conveys your voice and sentiments. No boiler plates. Whether we wrap words around your rough ideas, or edit a draft you've been working on, your tone and intention will remain.

Thirty years of writing for others -- from corporate executives to chaplains, from professors to poets, and the many individuals who have contacted me with the click of their mouse -- has given The Scribbler the ability to crawl inside a situation, lasso the jumbled emotions of an individual, and put them to paper.

Please send a few details about the event and the situation, to the address below, to give me an initial sense of your speech or eulogy:

Is it a retirement speech or eulogy for a family member, lifelong friend or colleague?

An invocation or thank you speech for an award?

A motivational speech for a sales meeting?

Do you want a toast, a poem or limerick for a wedding or anniversary celebration?

Something else?

When do you need it?

How long do you want to speak?

Tell me what you need, and I can give you an estimate of my time and charges. Generally, I charge $25 an hour. Thus, the usual three to four minute eulogy would be $75 to $100; a limerick $50; invocation$40.
