Rhythm & Blues on Okeh Records

In late May of 1951, Columbia Records decided to end its series of R & B recordings on the Columbia 30000 series. They had among its roster Chuck Willis, Dusty Brooks, Sylvia Vanterpool (future Little Sylvia and Mickey & Sylvia vocalist), The Five Scamps, Chris Powell, and The Picadilly Pipers. The new enterprise would be a revival of the Okeh label (pronounced OK) and would carry a number of R & B artists. The label was phased out by Columbia in 1942 to center all performers on the parent label because of wartime production limits. Now Danny Kessler takes over production and A & R for the new version of Okeh Records. On June 4, 1951 the first single recordings on the Okeh label were released.
