Beyond The Sea stars Kevin Spacey as Bobby Darin, Kate Bosworth as Sandra Dee, John Goodman as Steve Blauner, Bob Hoskins as Charlie Cassotto Maffia, Brenda Blethyn as Polly Cassotto, Greta Scacchi as Mary Duvan, Caroline Aaron as Nina Cassotto Maffia, Peter Cincotti as Dick Behrke, Michael Byrne as Dr. Andretti, Matt Rippy as David Gershenson, Gary Whelan as Jules Podell, and William Ullrich as Little Bobby.
If you're looking for The Bobby Darin Story do not go to Beyond The Sea. However, if you are looking for the Kevin Spacey self-promoting, I'm versatile movie, this is the film to see. Kevin Spacey does all his own stunts (dancing and singing). This is not a bio-pic, but a musical version of Bobby Darin's life. There is a disclaimer at the end of the film regarding the story and the characters. Two-thirds of this film is a musical that should be on broadway, not in the theaters promoting itself as The Bobby Darin Story.
I am a fan of Bobby Darin's music. I was greatly disappointed with the way the film served to showcase Kevin Spacey and not the great Bobby Darin. In contrast to the film Ray, Beyond The Sea does very little for those that love Boby Darin's music or are interested in learning about his life. However, there are some good performances by Kate Bosworth and the rest of the cast.
Having totally disliked this film, I predict great things at the OSCAR's. In fact, I have a bet concerning how well it will do.
I give it 1 out of 5 Swords:
