Pirates of the Caribbean is a movie badly in need of a sustained plot. It is a film about a pirate captain trying to regain his ship, and a cursed mutinous crew trying to return a treasure to end their living dead existence. Amidst this plot is always the woman betrothed to a military man who falls for the pirate captain. Where have we seen this plot before? In every pirate movie ever made. However, this movie is a bit dark. It takes place mostly at night, because the cursed pirates look like skeletons in moonlight. Not only do they loose their flesh in moonlight, but there clothing becomes torn and looses all color.
Pirates of the Caribbean is pirate movie that has been sanitized for your protection. Johnny Depp plays Captain Sparrow, who acts drunk all the time, but is never seen drinking. There is some action, but actual stabbings, slashing only happens to the living dead pirates aboard the Black Pearl.
Not only is this a bad film, but it steals a scene from a pirate movie that children will enjoy, the 1952, Crimson Pirate, starring Burt Lancaster. The stolen scene is not done as well as it was in 1952. Rent or buy The Crimson Pirate for an excellent pirate movie, suitable for the entire family.
I give it 2 out of 5 forks:
