The Standley Middle School Music program offers a comprehensive instrumental music experience which includes 4 levels of Concert,
Jazz, and Marching Band, plus the San Diego Unified School District's largest String Orchestra. Current and former students
now occupy key positions in all of San Diego's youth, collegiate, and professional ensembles.

All students have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument at Standley. Choose the ensemble that's right for you:
BEGINNING BAND: ALL GRADES - NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY. Loan instruments are available on a limited basis.
INTERMEDIATE 6TH GRADE BAND: ALL in-coming 6th grade students of woodwinds, brass, and percussion with experience in the
elementary program are eligible.
INTERMEDIATE 7-8 BAND: seventh & eighth grade students with 1+ years of experience.
ADVANCED/MARCHING BAND: sixth, seventh, & eighth grade students by selection/audition only.
JAZZ BAND: sixth, seventh, & eighth grade students by selection/audition only. Standard "Big Band" instrumentation:
4 trumpet, 5 sax, 4 trombone, 4 rhythm (guitar, bass, drums, piano).
INTERMEDIATE ORCHESTRA: sixth, seventh, & eighth grade students of violin, viola, 'cello, & string bass.

Our Director

PHILLIP STEVEN MARCUS is a 16-year veteran of the San Diego Unified School District and is currently in his 14th year
as Music Director at Standley Middle School in University City. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory
of Music, Mr. Marcus received the Bachelor of Music Education Degree and went on to graduate study at San Diego State University
as a Graduate Assistant under Charles Yates and Harold Warman. Mr. Marcus holds 2 teaching credentials in California as well
as a Life teaching credential for the state of Missouri.
A 16-time honoree of Who's Who Among America's Teachers, and a 19-time honoree of the EdUCate! Foundation's "Honor a Teacher"
program, Mr. Marcus has distinguished himself as an outstanding educator. He is the founder of the University City High School
Centurion Band and is a co-founder of the San Diego Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Among his many honors are the PTSA Honorary
Service Award, KUSI -TV 51's "Class Act: Teacher of the Week", SDUSD Site Teacher of the Year 2000, Outstanding Young Men
of America, the David Paul Schuchman Award for Outstanding Secondary Music Teacher of the Year 2004, and was selected as one
of twenty National Finalists in the Barbie Arts Teacher of the Year National Search 2004. In 2005, he was chosen as conductor
of the San Diego Unified All-City Concert Honor Band. Mr. Marcus was also named Outstanding Music Educator for the World
of Music Festival - San Diego in 2005 and again in 2006.
