Student Organizations

The College Student Council (CAS-SC) is the primary student organization within the college. It is a political organization that supposedly seeks the empowerment of the student body, as well as enlighten them about the social issues that a UP student is supposed to be knowledgeable and affecting (not affected) about.

Apart from CAS-SC, there are two major types of organizations inside the CAS: academic, fraternity and sorority, social-cultural, and political.

Academic organizations include program-oriented organizations, like the Organizational Communication Society (Orcomsoc) and Organization of Area Studies Majors (Orgasm).

Fraternity and sorority type of organizations are University-based organizations which most members are in CAS. Recognized fraternities in CAS are Alpha Phi Omega (APO), Alpha Sigma (AS), Tau Omega Mu (TOM) and Pi Sigma. The UP Vanguard Fraternity is not a college- or unit- (i.e., University) fraternity but a systemwide, military-oriented fraternity.

Social-cultural organizations include clubs which members are mainly members of or are inclined towards minority groups, arts and special interests. Examples are Lakan (organization of students who come from or live in Bulacan), Biorhythm (chorale group of CAS), and Tanghalang Batingaw (a cultural performance group).

Politically inclined organization is the type that is prevalent in CAS. These pretend to have ideals or objective reason of existence, but they are actually politically-charged and -seeking organizations and get student members to go with them during rallies. Examples are Gabriela, League of Filipino Students (LFS), Anakbayan, and Katipunan.
