Billy Tsounis Interview

Billy Tsounis, guitarist for Uncle Max's Cosmic band, Vasoline Tuner and Engineanimalpeople, was cool enough to answer some questions I sent him. So off we go........

circusofpower.net: Billy, How is the new UMCB/Fat Nancy music coming along?

Billy: It is coming along great, we are writing a bunch of songs and allowing them to breathe, grow, and have a shiny and proud everlasting cosmic boner.

circusofpower.net: Should we expect a different sound or is the new music in the style of Licking The Toad?

Billy: It is a bit different. Same guys, but the process of osmosis and circumstance has created the obvious changes. It is definately fat, primal and rocking.

circusofpower.net: How did the addition of a second guitarist come about?

Billy: We were going to get either a guitar player or keyboardist or I was going to play keys in some songs,so instead of carrying extra equipment we got Steve. Steve has played bass in the Vasoline Tuner band with me for years and we already knew him anyways. He played bass with Alex and I in the short lived Absolutely Free thing we had for a while and he is easy to get along with and is a funny and kinky guy.

circusofpower.net: How did you meet Alex Mitchell and how long was it before you guys started to write music?

We met through some musician ad that I had, Alex called up, went to meet him and within a day or so we wrote Letters from the Inside.

circusofpower.net: How do you guy's tend to write. Does Alex bring lyrics, do you bring music or is it different all the time?

Billy: Different all the time. I will give him a tape of Ideas/songs, and he will pick what he likes or best responds to or we jam in the room, he improvises and we will later clean it up and give it that shinyness of love.

circusofpower.net: As a guitar player, who are your influences?

Billy: Frank Zappa, Andy Summers, Ted Nugent, Snakefinger, Helios Creed, Funkadelic, Sonny Sharrock, Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Peter Frampton, Golden Earring, Budgie, Jimi Hendrix, Tony Iommi, Sonic Youth, Justin Broderick, Andy Gill, Ritchie Blackmore, Van Halen, and some I cant remember right now, and a bunch of cosmic mumbo jumbo existential fiction.

circusofpower.net: As a song writer, who are your influences?

Billy: Anybody or anything with a sense of impulse, reaction, irreverance. I prefer to do whatever I feel like at the particular time based on will, moods or situations to justify the partical fleeting moment. I could tell you somebody different at different times of the day and it would not be the same person.

circusofpower.net: If you are hanging out with some friends, what music are you gonna throw on?

Billy: If I believe they will bore me, I will put on something that I like so I can listen to that instead. It is not usually rock & roll and I tend to play the undecided neurotic horny pimple faced dj ,swithing cd's constantly in a half hearted attempt to impress with my latest collection of whatever. I do not have many friends though and I prefer to hang by myself almost exclusively.

circusofpower.net: Can we expect some sort of tour from Uncle Max or just local L.A. gigs?

Billy: Ultimately we would like to play all over the planet. The band deserves to be heard and people will do themselves a favour by letting it get into their brains and butts. We will have some shows in L.A for starters and then take it from there.

circusofpower.net: Any last thoughts for all the Uncle Max fans in cyber land?

Billy: Keep checking the site for info , new music etc. and hopefully we will get to meet in your town.
