Bight:  A curve or loop taken in a line when the loop is not at one of the ends.

Bitter end:  The end of a line or rope.

Bend:  Construction that connects two ropes.

Bosun's Chair:  Sling or seat used to hoist a person.

Capsize:  This is when a knot turns over or distorts.

Fid:  Tapered pin used to splice rope.

Frapping turns:  Turns used to bind lines together.

Lay:  The construction of the rope, the direction it is twisted.

Marlinspike:  A tapered pin or spike use to splice, knot, etc...

Round turn:  Two turns around an object.

Serve:  To wrap or cover with a tight cover.

Sheath:  The cover in double braid or other multipart rope.

Standing part:  The main part of the line, the inactive part of the line.

Strand:  Fibers are twisted into yarns, yarns are combined into

Thimble:  The round eye used to prevent chafe in an eye when splicing .

Whip:  To bind the end of a rope with twine.

Working end:  Quite literally the end of the rope you are working with.  The part you are knotting, splicing, etc...

Yarns: Are twisted from fibers and are in turn made into strands, which are made into rope.
