Figure Eight Knot
 

This is a stopper knot.  Stopper knots are used to keep the free end of a rope from running out through a fairlead or block.

The figure eight is bulkier (and thus a better stopper) than an overhand knot and is somewhat easier to untie.  Take an extra half turn around the standing part and you have the stevedore knot--even bulkier yet.
