EDUC 6033 Catalog Description: "Prerequisite: EDUC 6032 or equivalent. Design, analysis, and application of educational research techniques, both qualitative and quantitative."

COUN 6033 Catalog Description: "Prerequisite: Must be accepted into the Counseling Program and completed COUN 6032 with C- or better or have in-progress enrollment in COUN 6032. This course will enable the counselor to design, analyze and apply counseling research techniques, both qualitative and quantitative.”

Course Objective: The primary objective of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the research process and its methodology to make them competent consumers of educational research findings. Special attention will be given to the evaluation and interpretation of research results, to the limitations imposed by techniques used in research, and to an understanding of the principles underlying effective scientific investigations.

Course Organization: The course will be problem-centered. Each student will select a research procedure that will provide a solution to questions or situations relevant to the student's interests and needs. A major problem will be the selection of a research question and a review of the related literature concerning that question. In conjunction with this problem will be abstracts of research studies. A second major problem will be the application of research processes in the writing of a research prospectus for a proposed study selected by the student. This will involve problem identification and statement, formulation of hypotheses, and the selection of appropriate tools for collection and analysis of the data. There will be two written examinations designed to test the student's understanding of the content covered in the course lectures. Finally, each student will briefly summarize his or her project in a class presentation.

Relevant Standards: UHCL School of Education Standards for Advanced Programs (3) An educational leader understands and uses research and assessment tools to improve student learning and school programs.

Academic Honesty: The Academic Honesty Policy at UHCL (found on pages 78-81 of the 2006-2007 catalog) states:  "Academic honesty is the cornerstone of the academic integrity of the university.  It is the foundation upon which the student builds personal integrity and establishes a standard of personal behavior."

The Honesty Code of UHCL states: "I will be honest in all my academic activities and will not tolerate dishonesty."

Because honesty and integrity are such important factors, you should be aware that failure to perform within the bounds of these ethical standards is sufficient grounds to receive a grade of "F" in this course and be recommended for suspension from UHCL.

NCATE: UHCL is one of only 11 universities in Texas accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). NCATE is a non-profit, non-governmental alliance of 33 national professional organizations recognized by the U. S. Department of Education as an accrediting body of schools, colleges, and departments of education. Meeting NCATE accreditation standards helps to ensure high quality teacher, specialist, and administrator preparation. Through the process of accreditation, NCATE works to make a difference in the quality of P-12 education.

Professional Dispositions: As an NCATE accredited institution, UHCL will recommend for certification only those persons who have demonstrated the necessary strong, positive dispositions associated with the professional educator. This means that a student may be withdrawn from a UHCL program if the student is judged to not have the required professional dispositions, regardless of the student's academic record.

The statement defining what is meant by "professional dispositions" is given at http://prtl.uhcl.edu/pls/portal/docs/PAGE/SOE/POLICIES/DOC/STATEMENTONPROFESSIONALDISPOSITIONS.pdf

Every student must read and follow The Policy on Professional Dispositions, which is provided to define the standard of behavior the School of Education expects of its candidates. At the end of the course and other appropriate times your instructor will assess your compliance with these standards. These assessments will be invaluable to you, and the program faculty, as you continue to develop professionally

Americans with Disabilities Statement: Any individual with a disability who requires a special accommodation should inform the professor and contact the Disability Services office, Student Services Classroom Building, Room 1.301, or call (281) 283-2626.
