Altar
Typically, a table or other elevated platform that holds symbols and Tools during ritual.

Anointing
Applying oil or salt water to consecrate a person or object. A form of Hallowing more correctly called Blessing.

Aradia
A Name used in Spiral Ash to denote the Earth/SkyMother.

Ariana
The Maid; the young Gidden whose influence is strongest from Imbolc(2/2) to Beltane(6/1), peaking at Ostara(3/22).

Asperging
Sprinkling with salt water to consecrate.

Athame
The ritual knife that doubles as the symbol of the God. Ritual tool that is currently symbolic of Air. (The Athame and Wand often get assigned to Fire and Air respectively. This is not incorrect, but agreement on symbolic meaning within a Stand is necessary to ensure smooth cooperation.}

Attribute
A characteristic inherent to a Deity. Such as Trickster is a characteristic of Lokin.

Aweg
{Ah-way}The 4th Phase of a Deity when its influence is essentially nonexistant.

Banishing
Getting rid of unwanted or irrelevant energies within the Circle.

Basic Rite
The rite of Casting a Circle.

Beastlord
The title of Janir, also his major Attribute.

Blessing

The ritual construction of Sacred Space.

Censing
Using incense to consecrate a person or object. Often part of Saining.

Chalice
The goblet on the Altar that is the symbol of the Gidden.

Circle
The temporary Sacred Space where ritual is done.

Consecration
To make sacred or hallowed. There are 3 forms: Blessing, Hallowing, and Saining

Crone
The title and major Attribute of Morriwen.

Cross Farthings
The intermediate directions: Northeast, Southeast, Southwest,and Northwest.

Cup
The goblet or bowl on the Altar that holds and represents Water.

Cycle
The two year span that Twyerns recognize through the Mask Ritual and within the Basic Rite.

Dance
The round of the year and the Cycle.

Dance the Dance
Celebrating and carrying forward the changes of influence and transformations of the Cycle. Also, the title of a song in Spiral Ash's Standbok.

Dead of the Year
Time of year that spans from Samhain(11/1) to Yule(12/21). aka: The Fallows.

Departing Deity
Deity who's influence is transfered to the new (Incoming) Deity with the help of the Presiding Deity. See Major Sabbats.

Departing Phase
Phase of the Deity that is transformed to the new (Incoming) Phase by interacting with the Presiding Phase of the other Deity . See Minor Sabbats.

Disks
A quick divination tool that uses 5 disks of antler or wood.

Divination
A practice for revealing hidden or future knowledge.

Droupen
The 3rd Aspect of a Deity when it's influence is waning.

Aradia during odd-numbered years, or Herne during even-numbered years. Twyerns call for the Earth/* to ascend and honor their rites.

Evoke
To call forth.

Farthing
Quarter; both for directions and Farthing Days(Sunsteads and E'endays)

Father
The title and major Attribute of Frelor.

FourFold
A way of viewing the Gods that has 4 Gods and 4 Giddens.

Frelor
The Father; the middle-aged God whose influence is strongest from Midsummer(6/22) to Mabon(9/22) peaking at Lammas(8/2).

Fullfyllan
The 2nd Aspect of a Deity when they are most influential.

Ritual movements with symbolic meaning, used in Circle.

Gidden
The view of Deity as female. This term predates Goddess and honors the older, more equal status of females.

Glyphs
Stylized pictures of Gestures.

God
The view of Deity as male.

Goddess
The view of Deity as female. A clumsy kludge that combines the AS masculine form 'God' with the Latin feminine, diminutive suffix 'esse'. Which literally means 'male Deity who is female'.

Grimfather
Title and major Attribute of Hadin formulated to embody the deathbringer/initator parts of his being.

Gruag
The Hag; Last Gidden whose influence is strongest from Samhain(11-1) to Imbolc(2/2) peaking at Yule(12/21).

In a Minor Sabbat, the result of the interaction of the Presiding Phase and the Departing Phase.

Initiation
In Twyern: The ritual that marks the beginning of learning AND the acceptance of a new member into a given Stand.

To call upon.

Officiant/s
A fancy name for the person/s running a ritual. A holdover term from ceremonial Magick. Twyerns standing Weardian (or actual Weardians)are the Officiants in a Twyern rite.

Octant
The Farthings and Cross-Farthings of the Circle. Each Fullfyllan God or Gidden stands in one of the Octants.

Pantheon
lit. "all the Gods of a people". Twyerns use the term for the 11 Gods and Gidden.

Pentacle
The symbol of Earth, frequently five sided, though not always.

Pentagram
Five pointed star, used in banishing and invoking.

Phase
One of the 4 divisions in the influence of a Deity. If the Deity is gaining influence, it's phase is Showen; at it's peak, Fulfyllan; fading influence, Droupen. Indistinguishable from the background,Aweg.

Phase Rune
A graphic representation of the Phase of a Deity. These runes can be used for divination and to represent the Departing, Presiding, and Incoming Phases/Deities during Sabbats.

Phase Rune Poem
Verse that expounds the meaning of the Phase Runes, will change as understanding changes.

Polytheism
The practice of worshipping Gods within a Pantheon, where they have an established relationship.

Presiding Deity
The dominant presence of a Major Sabbat that acts to help transfer the Departing Deity's influence to the Incoming Deity.

Presiding Phase
The dominant influence of a MinorSabbat that interacts with the Departing Phase to transform it to the Incoming Phase.

One of the 25 seasonal rituals in Twyern. There are 8 Major Sabbats and 16 Minor Sabbats in a year.

Sacred Space
Ritually purified area within a Circle or Temple where rites are held.

Saining
To make holy with a sign. i.e. hammer, pentagram, etc. One of the 3 forms of Hallowing.

Scourge
Ritual tool symbolic of learning and experience.

Showen
The 1st Phase of a Deity when its influence is increasing.

SkyFather/Mother
Herne during odd-numbered years, Aradia during even-numbered years. Twyerns call for the Sky/* to descend and honor their rites.

Spiral Ash
The first Stand formed in Twyern . My Stand.

Stand
The name for a group of Twyerns working together. The word implies a sense of rootedness.

Standbok
lit. "The Book of the Stand"; the repository of the Stand's history, lore, and practice. Also, and significantly, "The Book of Positions Taken"; includes position papers on topics the Stand finds important. Standbok has at least 3 major divisions (New, Active and Archived) and frequently many more smaller divisions. It is reviewed and updated at least once a Cycle.

Standing Weardian
When a Twyern takes on the responsibility and duties of a Weardian on a temporary basis. Until a Stand is quite mature, it likely won't have any acknowledged Weardians. Standing Weardian allows for functioning prior to declaring Weardians in a Stand.

Stang
The forked staff discussed on Pg. 4 - "Temple Lore II" The Stang is often used in place of the Athame during group workings.
Stanglet
The 8" to 12" version of a Stang used as a personal tool.
Stones
A system of divination based on 4 colors of stones. Unique to Twyern, it uses the Phase Rune Poem for interpretation.

Sword
Ritual tool that is currently symbolic of Air. (The Sword and Wand often get assigned to Fire and Air respectively. This is not incorrect, but agreement on symbolic meaning within a Stand is necessary to ensure smooth cooperation.} The Sword is sometimes used in place of the Athame during group workings.

Permanent space dedicated for ritual use. A Temple Dedication is in the Spiral Ash Standbok.

Twyern
lit: "two-years"; A 4Fold religion derived from Wicca whose Cycle spans 2 years. Also, a practioner of this religion.

Wand

Weardian
The teacher/guardian/Elder of Twyern. A Weardian is chosen within a Stand and has certain requirements to fulfill before they can claim the title within that Stand. It is unnecessary for a Stand to have any Weardians to function. Any Twyern can Stand Weardian to fulfill any role they are competent to handle.

Wicca
A generally duotheistic religion that arose during the 1950's as an attempt to revive a Pan European Pagan religion that subsequent research has shown never to have existed. Interestingly, this new religion has shown an amazing adaptability and keeps growing. Despite it's inital shaky roots, the experiential nature of the religion has led many people to embrace it. Twyern initially had roots derived from Wicca.

Witchcraft
Originally, The technology of folk magick with little, if any, religious content. Also, a term used to self describe some branches of polytheistic Paganism, including Twyern.
