UNDERSTANDING TWYERN

DIVINATION BY STONES

Understanding Twyern

Understanding the Twyern requires more effort than some systems, there are very few hard and fast rules. Experience and thoughtful meditation is much more useful than a quick rundown of Gods and Gidden and their attributes. But here are a few pointers that are from my personal interpretation of Twyern. Which will likely change as my understanding does. The colors given are from the Stones Divination. It takes two stones to designate one of the Deities.

Color of Stones Deity Name Deity Title Deity Attribute
yellow - yellow Lokin Trickster Change
white - white Ariana Maiden Growth
yellow - red Janir Beastlord Expansion
white - black Rheya Mother Manifestation
red - yellow Frelor Father Stability
black -.white Morriwen Crone Retention
red - red Hadin Grimfather Endings
black - black Gruag Hag Dissolution
In addition to the Attributes of the Deities, there are also the Phases of each
Attribute and, likewise, the Deity. The four Phases are designated by a third stone.
  The colors are Yellow:Showen, White:Fulfyllan, Red:Droupen, and Black:Aweg.

Divination by Stones

by Valire'brand

The use of stones for divination is very old, so old it predates history. Deciphering the patterns of cast stones has long been the mark of a sage, priest or leader. And with good reason, reading the stones requires a mind open to the new, yet not discarding the past.

There are many different ways to read stones, the way I use is quite new. Yet it partakes of the very old. Stones have heft, they have a definite tactile component. They may be cast, creating patterns that are new and varying. Most importantly, stones demand absorption in the reader. There are no meanings that are defined except by the reader in relation to the query. There are no symbols or pictures to color interpretation. There are only the reader, the question and the stones.

My opinion is that spatially oriented people do better with stones, but I only hold that as a working hypothesis. Many people find the pictures on Tarot an aid, but some of us find they actually obscure rather than illuminate meaning. The stones force us to look inward for meaning, drawing our intuition to the surface of our minds. It's all a matter of what works for you.

So, how then do I read stones? Mechanically, I cast them, then look at them in relation to the question posed, then read the answer. Simple! Well, okay, not really! The casting is easy; throw the stones, find the kernels and read outward. The looking is what is complex, when that is done, the answer is also pretty apparent. So, what does looking entail? First, the question is brought to mind, like in any reading. Then I rely on the four P's, Postion, Pairing, Proximity, and Pattern.

  • Position: What stones lie close, what lie far apart, where are the kernels?

  • Pairing: moving outward from the kernels, which stones make sets; do the sets share stones; if so, consider it significant.

  • Proximity: what is the closest pairing, where is its phase stone, are the kernels near or far from the pairings?

  • Pattern: are there groupings that suggest meanings, is there a flow in the overall cast that suggests a trend or a spacing that implies separation?

Finally, after careful consideration of the above, answer the question. You'll know it by then.
