Must-See Sam

Sam Every episode of The West Wing is worth seeing at least once in order to catch a glimpse of our guy in action. (Unfortunately, sometimes a glimpse is all you get.) But there are those select episodes and scenes that demand repeat viewing. Certainly if you want to call yourself a true Sam Seaborn supporter, these episodes are not to be missed. The list is here for your perusal and enjoyment. Your votes for the best Sam episode formed the foundation of the list. Sam

1.1 - Pilot
Our first meeting with Sam Seaborn, and he makes a great impression just out of the shower! Arguably Sam's best speech, made unknowingly to Leo's daughter, appears in the final act of this episode.

1.7 - The State Dinner
Sam in a tux! Need we say more?

1.8 - Enemies
A birthday message highlights Sam's perfectionist tendencies and thwarts an evening of Chinese opera with Mallory. Watch the Sam Seaborn quill in action.

1.11 - Lord John Marbury
A ho-hum episode, with the exception of Sam's piñata line. Just fast forward to the next to last scene in act three. Olé!

1.15 - Celestial Navigation
A classic! Sam and Toby take a road trip, and Sam attempts to navigate by the North Star. If you ever throw a nominee for the Supreme Court in jail, hope that Sam Seaborn doesn't show up to bail him out. There's sure to be trouble!

1.17 - The White House Pro-Am
Sam goes to the gym. Enough said.

1.18 - Six Meetings Before Lunch
The silver bullet speech. Sam wins the hearts of teachers everywhere.

1.20 - Mandatory Minimums
Sam tries to write, but has trouble getting to the verb. He introduces the phrase "nervous hooleila."

2.5 - And It's Surely To Their Credit
It's chivalrous Sam at his best, in this episode famous for its "Sam Seaborn Smackdown." Plus, we learn a little something about Sam's expert knowledge of Gilbert and Sullivan.

2.9 - Galileo
Sam's tendency to get flustered around women is showcased in this episode. Mallory--a smart woman who stupidly lets Sam get away. Two beautiful Sam speeches about exploration make you want to book a seat on the next space shuttle.

2.11 - The Leadership Breakfast
"Sam Seaborn's being so cute" in this episode with his geeky bravado on full display.

2.12 - The Drop In
Passionate, environmental Sam makes an appearance. Mixed reviews from fans on this one. Sam's speech is sabotaged, which is bad. But he sure looks gorgeous yelling at Toby about it, which is very good.

2.16 - Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail
A showcase episode for Sam and the favorite among Sam fans. Betrayal is the theme, as we watch Sam swing from impassioned to angry to hurt. His scenes with Donna--on the stairs and later in his office--are touching and sweet. And don't miss Sam asleep on Toby's couch!

2.18 - 17 People
While bantering with Ainsley, Sam introduces us to the handy expressions, "good night, nurse" and "that's a different can of tuna." Trying to punch-up a speech with the gang also offers plenty of fun Sam moments. No angst or disillusionment here. There's plenty of that to come later.

3.4 - Ways and Means
Sam habla español!

3.12 - 100,000 Airplanes
If disillusioned Sam is your cup of tea, this is the episode for you. He's writing the State of the Union Address and wishing it had more substance and less flash. Plus, former fiancée Lisa makes an appearance. Most will agree she is a disappointment and another stupid woman who lets Sam get away!

3.15 - Hartsfield's Landing
A quiet episode featuring a chess game between Sam and the president allows Sam to stretch his knowledge of diplomacy and international relations. Don't miss the end of the game. The president has a message for Sam that's sure to bring tears to your eyes.

3.20 - The Black Vera Wang
A love it or hate it episode, but worth watching to see a wet, angry Sam tell Kevin Kahn where to stick it.
