| Originally from Laguna Beach, California (1.1, 4.6), Samuel Norman Seaborn is a Magna Cum Laude alumnus of Princeton, class of '88, and Duke Law School, class of '91, where he was editor of the Duke Law Review (1.5, 2.3, 2.17, 4.6). He has worked on a state assembly campaign in New York, as a congressional aide, for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, and at the firm of Dewey Ballantine (1.1, 2.2, 4.6, 4.8). Sam spent seven years at Gage Whitney Pace, the second largest law firm in New York. In October of 1997, Sam's work involved protecting oil companies from litigation. His success with the firm had him one month from making partner. On the personal side, Sam was engaged to Lisa Sherborne, now a writer with Vanity Fair. Both his law partnership and his engagement got put aside when friend Josh Lyman brought him on board Democrat Jed Bartlet's campaign for the presidency as a speechwriter. When Bartlet took office in January 1999, Sam was named Deputy Communications Director and Senior Counsel (2.1, 4.6). He served as a senior adviser to the President on domestic matters, though generally not security related (1.1). In the fall of 2002, Sam agreed to run for Congress in the California 47th, in the place of deceased candidate Horton Wilde. He left his deputy position to campaign in Orange County (4.6, 4.7). After losing the election, Sam returned to the private sector, and began work for a law firm in Southern California. He also got engaged again, this time to an attorney. In a bit of symmetry, Josh Lyman came begging to offer Sam another White House position -- Deputy Chief of Staff for Matt Santos. Sam returned to the White House in January 2006, calling it, "Home, sweet home" (7.19, 7.22).
