Casper's Story
At only two
and a half years old, Casper has died. It is a long and tragic story, but I will attempt
to make it as interesting as possible.
I brought Casper with me from Anchorage, while I worked on this project in Denver. Casper lived with me in my apartment on the second story near downtown Denver. I walked him three to four times a day. On some weekend days, he went out 5 times. My apartment was near Cheesman park. After work, we would take the longest walk of the day to the park. Somedays it would be raining, others it would be snowing, and others it would just be nice and hot in the 90s. Casper loved it all. He loved to get out and play. In the apartment, he did really well. I never had problems with him. He was a very affectionate and friendly dog. My friend Jack and I are remodeling his house. Jack has two dogs that Casper loved to play with. So, while we were working, Casper and Jacks dogs would play. One day, Jack left his bird out of the cage to stretch and wander about. When he accidentally left the back door open, Casper came in, discovered the bird and commenced to tear it to pieces. Several days latter, while getting some supplies to work on the house, Casper escaped from Jacks back yard. When we pulled up with a truck load of supplies, Casper came running over from the neighbors yard. While unloading cement from the back of Jacks truck, I noticed a dead cat in the neighbors yard. This was the same yard that Casper had left just an hour earlier. It was obvious at this point that Casper had a taste for blood. A week later, Casper escaped from Jacks house. He decided it was better outside, so he went through some mini-blinds and then the screen to escape. I had to pick him up from the Aurora dog pound. Several nights latter, I let him out in the middle of the night so that he could go to the bathroom. Unfortunately Jacks cat, China, was out at that time and Casper saw her. Casper chased, caught, and killed China. After this I decided to find a home for Casper where he wouldnt be a menace to the neighborhood pets. A lady that Jack worked with had a farm out of town with lots of land for Casper to run and play on. She volunteered to take Casper. Jack picked up Casper and delivered him to his friend at work. Her son was there and was so excited. He told his mom that this was the type of dog that he always wanted and that he loved Casper. Less than 48 hours after being there, Casper proceeded to kill all of her kittens and several chickens. He then went to the neighbors farm and attacked some sheep. He ate the nose and ear off of one and an ear off of another. He then returned to her house and attacked the horse, damaging his leg. Her husband asked her why she brought Cujo home, then went and shot Casper. He was clearly out of control when it came to other animals. Her son then asked her how he cold ever have loved such a bad dog. It was a tough thing, but thats how things work out sometimes. I sure will miss him. |
