

Steve D. Matchett attended high school in Pearland, Texas and played tuba in the Pearland High School Band under director Jack Fariss. He studied tuba with Larry Campbell, who presently teaches at Blinn College in Brenham, Texas. He later went on to earn his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Houston in tuba performance, studying tuba there with William Rose. He has also had additional tuba studies with Arnold Jacobs, Warren Deck, and Dan Perantoni. He went on to earn his Master of Music degree in music composition from Sam Houston State University where he studied music composition with composer Fisher Tull. As a free-lance musician he has performed with all of the professional orchestras in Houston including the Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Theater Under the Stars, and the American Pops Orchestra. He has also performed with many leading brass ensembles in the city including the Houston Lyric Brass and the Paragon Brass. He serves as the coach and director of the Kinsmen Brass. He has also served as the winds and brass coach for the Greater Houston Youth Orchestra. Currently he holds the Henry Alexander tuba chair with the Lake Charles Symphony in Louisiana under the direction of William Kushner. His original musical compositions include solo and chamber works for brass, orchestral works, and various arrangements. Many of the pieces are published by Gulf Wind Music Press, which Steve owns, and RBC Music. His music has been performed in Europe and Japan, as well as in the United States. Steve lives in north Houston, Texas with his wife Teresa who plays and teaches cello.
