This crucifixion scene is based on a 14th Century Bulgarian original. The figures of Mary and John are from the Byzantine tradition. The gold work in the haloes is executed in pastiglia, a built up layer of gesso under the gold leaf to produce a three-dimensional surface. The rest of the painting is egg tempera in the tradition of the high middle ages.
