The Medical Board of California is state government agency, which licenses and disciplines medical doctors. The Board provides two principal types of services to consumers: license information, and investigation of complaints against physicians. If you have a problem with a physician or other health professional regulated by the Medical Board, you can file a complaint. If the problem appears to be a violation of the law, the Board will investigate it, and if a violation is confirmed, take legal action against the licensee. The Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) is one of several professional regulatory boards and bureaus that exist within the Department of Consumer Affairs. The BRN has the primary responsibility of licensing and regulating registered nurses in California. The BRN's responsibilities come from the Nursing Practice Act, which is composed of California statutes that give the BRN, among other functions, the authority to investigate complaints and take disciplinary action against registered nurses. The Board of Behavioral Sciences is responsible for consumer protection through the regulation of Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT, previously MFCC); Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW); Licensed Educational Psychologists (LEP); MFT Interns; and LCSW Associates in the State of California. The California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians is mandated to protect consumers from licensees who practice in an unsafe, incompetent or impaired manner. The Board has authority to revoke, suspend, or place on probation any license if the licensee has violated a provision of the law governing the profession (Business and Professions Code, Division 2, Chapter 6.5, Article 3). Further, the Board has authority to deny licensure to anyone convicted of a crime substantially related to the profession or who has done any act which, if done by a licensee, would be grounds for revocation or suspension of the license. The Board has established an aggressive enforcement program to ensure that timely and appropriate disciplinary action is taken against unprofessional, incompetent, or grossly negligent practitioners. The Board utilizes the services of the Attorney General's (AG) Office and the Office of Administrative Hearings (OAH) to ensure that disciplinary actions are handled in a fair and judicious manner.
