Welcome to the
Northern Division
A model railroad set in northern Indiana during 1967
Growing up in the Chicago area, and with railroaders on both sides
of my family, I couldn't help but be exposed to railroads. My grandparents
lived two doors away from the north end of the Monon Railroad's South
Hammond (Indiana) yard. Early on, "The Hoosier Line" became my favorite
railroad, with its Purdue-inspired black and gold diesels and down-home
passenger service. As a kid in the 1960s, I would literally spend hours
at the corner of Vine Street and Lyman Avenue, watching the hustle and bustle
of Monon's busiest yard. My other set of grandparents lived in Lowell,
Indiana, just 23 miles south of Hammond on the Monon mainline. When
visiting them, I would often borrow my grandfather's bike and ride down to
the depot to check out the action. It w
as only natural, then, that I would eventually decide to create a model
version of the railroad of my youth. This website is dedicated to
that effort.
Let's learn more about the Monon
