BUG
Barricades
This flag stantion is a replica of what was
used by the Brooklyn Union Gas Company in the 1960's and early 1970's. The
Traffic Gard #40 lanterns were displayed on these poles for night time warning.
In the daytime, the flags were placed out. These are the exact barricades that
they used during that period. They would typically place four of these around
an excavation and use nylon safety cord (not the orange that you see now but a
yellow with a black center). They went to flasher barricades, cones, and wooden
horses a bit later. These flag stantions were kept without the lanterns well
into the 1980's. It would not surprise me if there were a few around still but
I couldn't track any in the field. Con Edison used similar stantions though
without the stripes and only a single pole to take one flag. The reproduction
is right on though. If you talk to any of the work crews that have been around
for a few years, they'll tell you that they miss these. They could be used to
hold a halogen worklight at night off a line from their truck. The flags are
still the same as they have used for a long time. As you can see, they have
"The Brooklyn Union Gas Company" printed on them.
