Green Power Availability

TreeCan you really buy green electricity?

Yes. Although you can't specify which electrons show up at your wall outlet, you can buy green. Think of the electricity grid as a "lake." Power generators pour water into the lake; you and other electricity customers take water out. Although you can't specify which water molecules you take out, as a green customer you can ensure that generators pour "green" water into the lake at the same rate you remove it.

Buy new power sources. You can best help the environment by asking for green power from new facilities. If you buy environmentally preferable energy from an existing power plant, your dollars don't make much of a difference, because someone else was already buying that energy. However, if you buy from a new power plant, you increase the supply of green electricity.

TPCO is working with developers of several new small power production facilities in the midwest, east, and southeast U.S. fueled with biomass (Biomass & Methane Projects). The green power generated by these projects will displace fossil fired generation in their respective areas, and will put clean "green" water into the "lake" under the above analogy. While it may be impossible to trace precisely whose electrons are reaching your house or place of business, we have a pretty good idea as to the fuel source and how much pollutants are released into the atmosphere as a result. You can get an idea of where electricity comes from and pollution in your area by clicking on the items below.

How much pollution is put into the air in your area?

GreeningTPCO is looking for entities (i.e., individuals, businesses, industries, schools, organizations, etc.) who would like to essentially turn their power green by putting green power into a power grid at the same time they are consuming power from a power grid. It does not matter that the green electrons reach your house or place of business. The point is that they will displace other "non-green" electrons, resulting in a backing down of fossil fired generation. This would be accomplished through the purchase of the green power attributes separate and appart from the purchase of electricity from a local supplier and can be purchased for a location anywhere in the U.S. The product is called a "green tag or renewable certificate" and is typically sold for a premium of 1¢ to 2¢ per kWh. You could purchase a green tag or renewable certificate from a project in Tennessee and apply it to a load in Hawaii. In addition, we would release the CO2 credits associated with the energy and the resulting Greenhouse Gas Reductions could be reported to the Federal government exclusively by you under the Voluntary Reporting of Greenhouse Gases Program. These CO2 credits accumulated could have future market value.
