If you are a member of the EPA’s Green Power Partnership,
you have made a commitment to support renewable energy and we can assist you in
fulfilling that commitment in a most economical, effective manner.
Since all sources of energy are essentially
"pooled" on the electric grid from which you are supplied electric
energy, there is no way to know the fuel source of the electrons actually
flowing into your place of business. Therefore, the only way to know you are
supporting renewable energy is to ensure that the premium you are paying for
"green" power gets back to the generator putting renewable energy
into the electric grid. In other words, you cannot be sure of the fuel source
of the electric energy you take off of the electric grid, but you can be sure
of the fuel source of what you put into the electric grid.
Unfortunately, many retail suppliers of
green power do not pass the premium they collect from retail consumers of green
power on to the wholesale green power generators. To overcome this inequity green tags or renewable energy certificates
were developed whereby you can purchase the green power attributes of a
specific quantity of energy without purchasing the energy itself. Thus
supporters of renewable energy can pay the premium directly to the renewable
generator for green tags to ensure that a specific quantity of renewable energy
is put into the grid, but purchase the most inexpensive non-green power
available from a local retail supplier.
Not only is this the most inexpensive way to
support renewable energy, it is also the most effective. Because the green tag
can be purchased from any green generator anywhere in the nation, you can shop
for the most inexpensive tag, and the premium is paid directly to the green
generator thus encouraging the development of more green generators.
