Hello, And thank you for coming by. This Page is dedicated to NYPD Police Officers who have been killed in the Line of duty. Each month I will feature a different Police Officer who gave his life in the performance of duty. As of this writing their have been 567 NYPD officers killed in the line of duty(More than any other department in the nation) And every year the list grows larger. This is a place were we will honor them, thier memory,there families,and the nearly 40 thousand Men and Women of the NYPD, Who as you read this are bravely perfoming there duty to protect us all.
P.O. Gabriel Vitale 109 Pct

After receiving a radio call of a Alarm at a florist P.O. Gabe Vitale and his partner James Smith were patrolling the area nearby, When at the Corner of 149 th street and 35 th Ave they observed two suspicious looking men. When they tried to question the men they fled in separate directions. P.O. Vitale chased and caught one of the individuals at gun point but became worried about his partner. P.O. Vitale decided to call for assistance on his radio, And when he holstered his weapon the Male he had apprehended pulled a .45 cal handgun and fired several times at P.O. Vitlae striking him twice . P.O. Vitale was rushed to the hospital and underwent hours of surgery. Unfortunately the wounds proved to severe, and on December 24 1980 with his family at bedside P.O. Vitale died of his wounds. P.O. Vitale was the last of 7 NYPD Officers to die in the Line of duty in 1980.
A huge manhunt was launched to catch the gunman and after being found by detectives at a home in Flushing he fired several shots narrowly missing them, The detectives returned fire and seriously wounded him. He was tried and found guilty of Murder and sentenced to 30 years to life. His accomplice Also his brother, was also Cornered in a Queens Home not far from the shooting scene, He threw a live Grenade at the assembled Cops. Luckly it did not go off and he was apprehened. He was tried and found guilty and sentenced to 25 years to life.
P.O. Gabe Vitale is survived by his Wife Fran, And Children- Marc, Gabe Jr.,Ninette and Cynthia.
P.O. Vitale was very involved in his community, Organizing a little league baseball league, Basketball teams, Coaching and was also involved in the Big brother program. He devoted himself tirelessly to the children of his community. Several Memorials have been erected in his honor, But his greatest monument already exist. It is the many young people who have made Gabes spirit part of themselves and whose lives will be forever affected by his having touched them in their youth.
There is a annual 5k race held every year in College Point N.Y. in honor of P.O. Vitale and a Little league Baseball field in Westbury N.Y. named after him.
